Default Calgary to US Border

For a trip to the US border purely for visa issues with Canadian Border Services there seem to be two possibilities - Carway or Coutts. Anyone got any feedback on using either location?

Carway was easy enough when I did it. The staff there weren't too friendly though.

My suggestion would be Coutts. Its a bigger port and better equipped to deal with Immigration matters.

Looks like it's going to be Carway.

What is the procedure? Do you actually have to drive up to the US border office and tell them you're only entering USA to be able to enter Canada again straight away?

Do you have to complete any USA forms before hand?

Yes, you drive up to the US border control booth. If you want to enter the US you will be sent into secondary inspection to complete the visa waiver form (have $6 US cash ready for each person). Be aware that you may be photographed and finger printed.

Alternatively you can tell the US officer that you are flag-poling and ask for an administrative refusal of entry into the US. They may issue this and direct you to the turn-around route, however they may still send you into secondary inspection. I don't know if they will do the photograph and finger print if you just want an administrative refusal but if they do I wouldn't argue.

That was easy enough. US officials were pretty friendly and helpful. I told them what we were doing and they issued denied entry forms for the children and sent us back. He said they probably wouldn't bother putting the record on the computer as "what was the point for minor children". He said they deny entry to quite a lot of people who need visas for the US. They gave us tips on where to go next time ie don't bother stopping in Browning "you need to watch it there its indian reservation" head west for Whitefish. Canadian officials were fine.
