Default CAIPS form?

Hi,

my friend is trying to get CAIPS for his file and he has some questions about the form. What does he put in "requester's reference number"? at the top?

Also whats the difference between marking "access to information act" on the left and "privacy act" on the right? He's a Quebec applicant. Which other boxes would he have to mark? He said he had some number that starts with RT.... what number is this?
Cheers

[I]Not sure about the requester's ref number. Only reference number I provided was the immigration file number / client id[/I

Privacy Act - When a third party in Canada requests information on applicant's behalf
Access to Information Act - When the applicant is a resident in Canada

Hope this helps. I have sent mine 2 weeks ago and will see what comes back.. hopefully med requests first.

if he is replying for his spouse, he does not need a reference no, only if someone's is requesting on their behalf, will use the reference #.
good luck you will probably have them back with in 4 weeks.
sometimes they do send an acknowledgment letter too. When they receive request.
Good luck

Hi kleinluka,

If your friend is applying for his own CAIPS notes he does not need to fill out the requester's reference number. This is mainly for representatives who are requesting CAIPS on behalf of another individual.

Also, to clarify, if your friend is present in Canada and is making the request for his own information he can do so under the Privacy Act. The access to information act is the route taken by those who are requesting CAIPS on behalf of another individual.

If he is requesting CAIPS rather than FOSS notes then I am assuming his case is being processed outside of Canada. He will need to specify the location of the embassy handling his case and his visa file number. File Numbers start with B, V, E or S in most cases, does he have one of these? CIC can attempt to process a request without a file number, but it can take a little longer.

CIC has 30 days to respond to these requests, but if a mistake is made on the application or if anything is unclear they may extend this time period.

I hope this helps.
