I haven't been here for a while, but I have always found this forum EXTREMELY useful when going through the BUNAC / Quebec / SW process, and considerations. I have a load more Questions but felt for once that I should contribute.
I came out here on BUNAC in 8 wks ago, and 99.99% of people said given the ensuing economic downturn, it would be impossible to find any job, yet alone one in my field (Financial services). I'm happy to have tsarted my new role on Monday this week.
I am far from an expert, but here below are my tips (by no means universal nor exhaustive; won't apply to all folks but may apply to some)
- Start your search from DAY ONE of arriving
- Don't get attached to the whole socialising with other BUNACers. Whilst it's great fun, I found that the vast majority were out here for a bit of a laugh and a maybe a job (fair play to them); but I didn' want that attitude to rub off onto me.
- extensively use Workpopolis and Monster. EXTENSIVELY! Take time to build up a great profile on both sites, and regularly update your details each Sunday so that when recruiters search on Monday mornings, you'll be on their lists.
-From my experience, canadian employers go mor ga-ga over formal education than their UK equivalents. Let your education be promenant on your resume.
- Chase up employers after sending off your Resume
- The law of averages. Keep on banging out the CV's, however depressing the knockbacks are. The more you send out, the more responses you'll get.
- Use a separate resume for temp / contracting opps than you use for full time opportunities (where its possible to do this).
- Let emplyers aware, at an early stage of your full time commitment to being in Canada
- State clearly on your Resume that you have the legal right to work i Canada (without going into the details of how BUNAC works).
- Be persistent!!! There are jobs out there!
- Before coming over to Canada, try as much as possible to obtain the canadian equivalent of your certificates. Not sure how this works with other professions, but in accountancy it certainly is possible to.
- Get yourself an apparment and mobile cell fone sorted ASAP
- LinkedIn; another GREAT resource
- If in Toronto, try to be near a subway!
Thats my small 5 cents contribution!!!
Thanks to everyone for answering all my questions

Hi checkmate,
I am also looking to come out to Canada (Vancouver) in the coming 6 months to work in professional services. I am a newly qual ACA working in London in practice currently and aiming to get a visa through Bunac. It would be great if you could give me a bit more info on how to get the canadian equivalent of the ACA before you go and what work you are doing. I tried to PM you but i haven't made enough posts yet!
Thanks!
