You can obtain an Open Work Permit if you apply via the common-law in Canada process (and do it correctly). The problem is technically you cancel that application when you leave Canada.

If you are able to go home briefly to visit your friends and family before you apply for common-law sponsorship, instead of after, that would be better. Otherwise you would be well advised to apply for processing outside Canada.

Hi Ron, thanks for the great advice. I wonder though, if I were to go home then come back with a view to get my common law sponsorship started how would customs view that? Can I apply for processing outside Canada when I'm in Canada or do I have to be at home? I read somewhere that short trips away are acceptable, I wouldn't want to push that though!
