Default Britain entering US from Canada

Hi

I hope someone can help me out with this. I am staying with my Canadian girlfriend in Windsor, whilst waiting for my PR to come through via Conjugal Sponsorship. We are taking a trip to the Georgian Bay area next weekend and want to take a shortcut through Michigan. I would like to know if I will need any visa or other clearance beforehand. I visited Detroit the last time I was here in January and had no problem, but I believe this was because I had flown into the US from the UK and travelled onto Canada and already had my passport stamped. This time I flew into Toronto. I also intend to do the driving, would this be possible if I am covered for driving under my Girlfriends insurance policy for Canada? These may seem like questions that can easily be answered by various authorities in Windsor, but I'm not that keen on automated answering services! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Simon
