Default Boyfriends occupation question for common law app.

Boyfriend sponsoring me common law outland.

A bit of a puzzling one (to me!) concerning my boyfriends occupation.

He is a realtor. He is part of a team but is classed as self employed for tax purposes. He has been a realtor since qualifying in April 2014.

The letter says to state his regular hours per week and salary. But there are no regular hours and his pay is commission based. Would the letter from his employer just need to state this?

I have his Option C already but because he only started real estate in April of 2014 the Option C has no income relating to that. Prior to April 2014 he was a supply teacher.

Any help appreciated!

If he has an employer he is not self employed. CRA would be all over that. You cannot be self employed for 'tax purposes'. CRA has a clear definition of what constitutes self employed, want to be careful of that one. CRA have been looking at self employed constractors for a while

One would put hours as variable, using an average per month over the past 8 months or an estimate. Take the previous years reported nett income (after expenses if he is claiming self employed), divide by 35.

Thanks Aviator..

Apologies if I used the wrong wording there..

Hmm ok i'll check with him again on this. He hasn't filed any taxes as a realtor yet as he only qualified in April, so maybe he has got confused with the exact wording and how he's to do it.

Most (almost all) realtors are self-employed. The brokerage should issue a T4A slip with any earnings in box 20.

It he is an employee the brokerage will issue a T4 slip with earnings in box 14.

Thanks Jon.. I asked him last night and he's really not sure.

And because he hasn't had a T4 from them yet..only started his role in April 2014..i cant check that.

Hmm I guess he will have to ask his boss/colleague.
