Default Bereavement and expired PR card

Hi all. My father in law passed away this week and we need to get to Canada ASAP. We live long term outside Canada in UK, so upholding residency with canadian spouse. My issue is my pr expired in 2019, so I have applied for a PRTD online. I have marked it as urgent, but have no idea how quickly they process urgent PRTD, does anyone know?? Is there a possibility I can still get into Canada on my British passport and complete an eta, without a PRTD? Also I have seen you can now apply to renew a pr card online but in Canada. Can I start filling out the forms online and upload docs from UK, and then when I get into Canada hit the submit button? Or does the whole process need to be completed online in Canada. It's just states application to be submitted in Canada? Many thanks all.

Hi, I'm really sorry to hear this.

I'm afraid you can't get an ETA, you do need a PRTD. They're usually pretty quick, and if you've marked it urgent and provided evidence (flight, death cert etc), then they generally do process it within days.

Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. I have applied but its too soon for the death certificate to be issued, so I have just written a letter of explanation, so don't have any actual proof right now. Also just realised our daughter canadian passport has expired!!!! So presumably a special authorisation for her won't be an issue? She is also dual nationality so can proof citizenship etc. This is turning into a complete nightmare. There seems to be no consideration for PR and Canadians living outside Canada. This wouldn't of been an issue if it was kept how it used to be.

I'm afraid they just expect you to have valid passports/PR cards, for situations like this.

Your letter should be fine if you don't have anything else, and yes, special authorisation for your daughter - https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration...a.html#findOut

Good luck, hope you can get it sorted asap.

Hi again! So I am still waiting for any communication from my "urgent" PRTD application online in UK. Its been 8 working days since I submitted it amd there is no update at all on my PR portal, just says submitted. I would of thought by now if an urgent application had gone through it would at least have some sort of update? Or is this just the time an urgent application takes?? Sooooo frustrating 😔

I'm completely at a loss as what to do. Any advice from anyone. Still not heard a thing about my urgent prtd sent on 29th oct. I didn't have an email confirming my application submitted, it just says on my pr portal submitted. Is this normal process or has something likely gone wrong? So stressed out given the circumstance.

I don't think anything has gone wrong, but if you couldn't submit proof and they just have a letter, you may find it's not being processed as an urgent case unfortunately. Hopefully it won't be too much longer, even a normal app normally would be back soon, so fingers crossed you hear something very soon.

Good luck.

Finally received my passport request yesterday! However when I go into the VAC Uk website it says I have to pay another fee, also its saying about biometrics. Am I correct in thinking the fee is just so they can send it back to me? Also it says to send receipt of payment, but how am to do that when paid via BACS? With regards to the biometrics, this was never mentioned in the PRTD application and I have not done it. Is this a generic instruction and I don't actually need to do them for a PRTD? The info online is just so confusing 😕
