Default Been for medicals - Complications

Hi everyone,

Advice needed, attended for medicals last week in Glasgow, expected complications with myself, have to attend specialist neurologist, what i was'nt expecting was that my 9yr old daughter failed her eye test and also was found to have a heart mumur, have to see specialists for both,
Now i am worried. Very nice doctor says she feels it will all be okay, but final decision rests with canadian doctor employed with immigration medical dept in London. Why does everything has to be so complicated, nothing ever easy or straightforward.

Anyone else experienced the same, please please help.

What if after all this time, they say NO.

Sharon

I feel for you Sharon

We took our medicals on Tuesday in Canada and my 8 year old was found to have a heart murmur and it's the first we knew about it. Thankfully we are seeing a cardioligist tomorrow and fingers crossed it should be nothing to worry about.

When are you seeing the specialist??

I am sure there'll be nothing to worry about; easier said than done! I just think PPR will be delayed while they make a decision.

I'd be devasted if we had to go home now as we've been here on a work permit for 10 months....

Good luck and all the best

Frankly I think you should be grateful for this information and take steps in any case to resolve the problems.

Shazza! Don't worry. I had similar problems when we went for medicals. Also have friend who came out 5 years before me with lifetime medical condition. The people in control have a method of working out how much your long time medical care will cost the Australian goverment. If it works out the same as it would for a person already living in Australia it doesn't make any difference to your application. I still remember how stressful it was in the two years it took for us to get our visa. We've been here in Brisbane for nearly three years. The hassle is worth the end result. Try not to worry about this. Just be thankful that these things can be sorted now that they've been found. You can't put a price on good health. Good luck with your visa. Where are you thinking of settling here? Maggie

We discovered our daughter has a heart murmur at birth, as well as a slight disability. She had the med when she was 3, sailed though it, we are now in BC, she is 15 and believe me a typical teenager!
Had it checked twice since we arrived and it has not been a problem not is it expected to be so.
Hope your daughter is equally as fortunate and everything goes well for you.

Hi Sharon, I just read your post, and got the weirdest feeling of deja vu, My family had their medicals last week in Glasgow and was told my 8 year old son had a heart murmur too.

I took him to my own doctor who done a thorough examination and told me it was very faint and there was nothing to worry about. He said it was that faint that he didnt feel a specialist referral was apt.

Many parents fear the worst when their child is diagnosed with a heart murmur, but this diagnosis is actually extremely common. Many kids are found to have a heart murmur at some point during their lives. Most murmurs are not a cause for concern and do not affect the child's health at all.

Thanks everyone for your kind reassuring comments, don't feel so alone now. Its a strange feeling, upset and worried for my daughter, in one way extremely glad that we now know and can seek help, but feeling guilty because i am also worrying about our visa and our dream of settling in Canada. Just adding to the stress levels. Ever wondered just how much you can take, just feels like we are always living on the edge.

Mel, hope everything goes well today with the cardiologist, we now have to wait for appointment, hopefully not too long. Please let us know how you get on.

What a shock for you guys. I am sure your first thoughts weren't exactly about emigrating either when you were told the news.

I have googled it and found out that its actually a pretty common thing. I learned that 30% of children have a heart murmur at some time during their childhood, and of course that's only the ones that are found during a medical, so that statistic is probably much higher.

Fingers crossed that everything will be okay for you all - although I am sure it will be

Hi Sharon

We went for the appointment with the specialist today; my daughter was quite nervous and when the doctor checked her, he thought her heart beat was very fast and loud, probably due to nerves. He also said her murmur was mild but she is being referred for an ultrasound to be checked further. We could be waiting up to 2 months for an appointment; more worry and stress!

Anyway thought I'd update you and hope your appointment goes ok.

All the best

CAn I ask, was it CHC that asked you to see the specialist ? Our son also has a heart mumour, but we have been told that it is no problem. As has already been stated, they are very common in children at some stage of their life and are unliklyto cause problems - so much so that they are (apparently) called 'innocent' mumours in children

Hi

Thanks for the reply; no it was doctor who referred her but he said that CIC would want more information anyway. Our medicals haven't been sent off yet as we only went on Tuesday and they need to wait for our blood and x-ray results.

The doctor said hers was an innocent murmur too; but felt her heartbeat was fast. She was so nervous before going to the appointment so could be that.

I'm not sure what will happen now; maybe they will send everything off with the other doctor's report, but I imagine CIC will want the results from the ultrasound too. I'm going to ring the doctor on Tuesday to find out.

Hi Mel,

When checked, my daughters pulse was very fast too! We too have been told she might need an ultrasound (echocardiograph).
Doctor in Glasgow did say she felt it was mild, but because it was newly diagnosed CIC would want it checked out further. Apparantly although very common and most diagnosed as innocent, some can be a sign of something else. Hoping very much that for us both that they turn out to be nothing, but worrying just the same.
What about having the ultrasound privately if theres too long a wait, expensive i know, but speeds things up, and then won't delay your meds going back to CIC. We are having to go private for all specialists, seeing opthamomlogist for my daughter on Mon, Neurologist on Frid, re; heart murmur, will have to wait see what specialist says, GP referring to paedatrician at local hospital, but if have to wait up to 3 months, will consider seeking private consultation. NHS timeline just doesnt work, when you have a deadline from CIC.

Perhaps look into the diet and drinks. Eliminate sugar, caffeine, chocolates,
junk foods,can/tin foods -they all contain hidden chemicals that can mess up
the hormones esp.high salt content,MSG and chemicals that have long names
that are hard to pronounce
Eat fresh fruits , vegetables, cook your own foods ,drink plenty of water and
even better if you could do juicing .

Just a thought.
