Default Applying for a common-law sponsorship, can I apply for a work visa before I go?

Dear expats,

My partner and I are flying to Toronto in December 2015 and we plan to apply for a common-law sponsorship in Canada whilst we are visiting.

Would it be better to go as a visitor or am I allowed to apply for a working visa before I go, as well as apply for the common-law residency when I arrive.

Any help would be great,

Chris

The process for getting a work permit is finding a job offer, the employer applying for a LMIA and if successful you can get a work permit. A WP is not something the individual just trots off to immigration and asks for.

There was a pilot program where inland sponsorship applicants were allowed to apply for a work permit while their application for PR was in progress - not sure if that program is still in operation.

In any case, I would think that arriving at the border as a visitor and stating that you are going to apply for PR might raise a few flags. You might be better off finding another way into Canada, such as getting the LMIA that Aviator mentioned or IEC if you are under 30. Or you might be better off applying outland for PR as the processing times are much shorter than inland.
