I have a question - my grandmother was born in Manitoba but the family returned to the UK when she was 7 years old. As my mother had a Canadian born mother does that make her also applicable to the Canadian citizenship rules - does that in turn make me eligible? We have applied for the Manitoba Provincial Nominee Program (we have no family there now) but wondered if it would be easier if I could claim citizenship through the family.

Which doesn't really answer anything.
His grandmother would almost certainly have acquired Canadian citizenship on
Jan 1, 1947.
The second question is when was his mother born. If she was born after 1947 but
before 1977, she would probably not have acquired Canadian citizenship at birth. She
would be entitled however to acquire it now:
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/citizen/born-e.html
As the acquisition of Canadian citizenship in his mother's case would not be
retrospective (to my knowledge), it would not give the poster any right to claim
Canadian citizenship.
If his mother was born before 1947 she would not have a claim to Canadian
citizenship. http://www.cic.gc.ca/manuals-guides/...zen/CH14.HTM#e
So the short answer appears to be no (the resident experts here are more than welcome
to correct me ... ).

I believe the UK has the exact rules. I researched on getting UK citizenship and
found out that unless your parent has the citizenship when you were born you can
forget it. "jillion" <[email protected]> wrote in message

Thanks for your help, my mother was born before 1947 so it looks like it's a no-goer but 'twas worth a try tho'!
