Mike,

Posted application to London for PR in Nov 23rd 2003, received AOR (letter) 6th Feb 04. Not bad as was expecting 3 month wait for AOR.

Applied under skilled worker program, destination BC (he says praying dearly).

Wife Nicky is an OR nurse applying to BC nursing authorities, lining up additional training experience in UK to obtain temporary working permit in BC, so 12-month or more wait is not such a big deal for us as it gives time for this to be completed.

Was doubting if application would be accepted for assessment as 'proof of funds' was cashflow/snapshot balance sheet showing house as major asset, but it got accepted for assessment all the same.

Drop me an email/ PM if you want further communication, share info, updates etc. Now's the long wait and fingernail biting for the asssessment ! Broken only by 2-week holiday/recce in July and bags more research via internet etc.

At least the clock is now ticking on the assessment - it's in the system !

Rich.

Hi there,

I applied on 1st November 2003, we live in the UK and received AOR on 20th
Jan 2004.

CHC London state we should expect our Initial Assessment between 12 to 14
months ( I think you can count that from the day your application arrived at
CHC London).

Where in the UK do you live, we're from Cambridge. Do you have relatives in
Canada? What's made you decide to emigrate there? Just interested so we can
compare notes!

Alison.

Hi Mike,

I am an applicant from Saudi Arabia but a native of the Philippines and application was delivered to CHC london via Fedex on the 7th of January. Curiously checking on when my bank draft will be encashed and hoping that it can be a good sign for AOR.

Cheers!

Hi, Yes we sent in our skillled worker application on January 16, 2004. I have since learned that I should have sponsored my husband, which is what I am going to do. We have sent the CHC a fax to withdraw the application. It will be interesting to see just how far it got, if anywhere. I will update you when I hear more.

Wow...........................loads of us in the same situation.

We applied in Mid Jan, but it has taken us 4 years to get here (we went back to school to get the points!!)

Planning to move to Vancouver/Kelowna if all goes well.

Still waiting for the AOR, sounds like it may be soon, if I haven't screwed anything up!!

If any of you fancy keeping in touch (without bothering the forum constantly drop us an email: [email protected]

Cheers,

Mike

Mike,

Bizarre co-incidence, we are targetting Kelowna / Central/Northern Okanagan area as well. Like the sound of the location, good weather, amenities, etc. Planning a 2 week visit in July to take it all in, do a full recce and try to find an ideal location. May be looking for a B&B business to run (fits nicely with the tourist aspect of the Okanagan) as well as plans for some commercial/residential/mixed property investment. Kelowna has hospital location for my wife's career and also has education facilities for me if we choose to go down that route. House prices out of town aren't too bad at all, seem even cheaper in the Northern Okanagan area.

Have you been to that area before ? If so, any views/thoughts ? Why did you choose kelowna ?

You applied in January 2003? Did the whole process take just four months to get your PR. Can you please tell me what class you applied under? Thanks.

We have been to the Okanagan many times in the past couple of years searching for the right property. It is lovely there, but do be aware of the forest fires. Okanagan mountain had a huge one last year just outside of Kelowna. Kelowna is most expensive, then Vernon and Salmon Arm is the cheapest at present. Kelowna has lots and lots of old people! Vernon has lots of professional people and has a lovely main street and Salmon Arm is just getting itself off the ground (very quickly and nicely in my opinion). They have just remodelled the waterfront and it is a very pleasant place. You do need to go out in Winter also to get a good balanced idea of the places. Property prices are quite a bit more in BC than in Ontario and most properties in Okanagan are modern plastic siding houses. We like old victorian brick and stone houses so we have moved our destination to Ontario where we can get that type of house and seriously cheap prices. We came back from Ontario 2 weeks ago and are flying back out there on Thursday. Have packed VERY warm clothes as Ontario is absolutely freezing!!!!

Tia,

We had been told that Vernon is quite nice but not in that much detail ! Sounds very nice, we have looked at property prices around there and they seem OK (well, it fits our budget anyway). Being located close to a nice town with picturesque main street would be a great bonus for us. Salmon Arm may be a bit too far away from intended location, but we won't know until we get out there for a first hand view.

If one of us was working in Kelowna, in your view would a location mid way between Kelowna and Vernon be a decent commute, maybe 30-40 minutes ? We're looking for a rural location, but handy for towns/amenities when needed.

Thanks for your input.

Rich.

Default Re: Anyone apply to London in Jan 04?

To be honest Rich, there isn't really very much between Kelowna and Vernon, just a road which meanders alongside the lake. The very first time we went to the Okanagan we stay at the Grand in Kelowna (right next to the floating bridge and furthest distance in Kelowna from Vernon) and it took us about 30 - 40 mins to get to Vernon. We travelled there everyday for 4 weeks as within 1 day we realised that we would definately not live in Kelowna. Large, sprawly place, not our kind of thing at all. The waterfront is absolutely beautiful but the traffic in the summer is a complete nightmare and with only the road via the floating bridge to get you back to Vancouver, forget about having visitors over the summer. Kelowna is nice, don't get me wrong but we are rural people and there is no way I would live there. It is pretty deadbeat between Kelowna and Vernon (unless you want to live up on the hills where the fires occur) although there is a huge golf community in the process of being built called Predator Ridge and there are some houses for sale there, however they are quite costly for what they are, but you do have the benefit of living on a golf course, if that interests you. Prices there have shot up in the last 18 months. If I was you I would I would consider buying a cheaper property in Coldstream, just on the outskirts of Vernon and doing the drive. Vernon also offers you an alternative road to getting to Vancouver. We really like Vernon but when we went back in October 2003 it has become so busy in just a few months. Vernon gives you a good central base though, within the Okanagan and if you lived in Coldstream you would not really have to drive through Vernon to get to Kelowna. If you look on the MLS you will see very cheap rural properties in Lumby.....DO NOT MOVE THERE. Lavington is a lovely place, but again I would not advise you move there as there is a waste disposal plant there "Tolko" and they have just won a contract for burning 8 more companies rubbish.

Vernon, itself is a pretty little place with a Victorian main street which has wrought iron verandas (like New Orleans on a tiny scale) and has a wide variety of schools, shops, financial institutions etc.

In my opinion Salmon Arm is in its infancy at the moment but I would think that within 5-10years will be even more wonderful and the Trans Canada Highway runs right through it (about 3 1/2 hours to Vancouver) and a much nicer road than the other road through Kelowna. Salmon Arm is within a half hour to Kamloops which is a large city. Depending on what you want they are all very different. If you are going out in the Summer to look at property in Kelowna, please do remember the traffic! You will not get to see as many properties as you would perhaps like as you will be stuck in traffic jams.

Any info needed on anywhere else in Okanagan, please feel free to ask. We have been there many times for decent periods of time and I think visited most places.

Tia
