What is wrong is the continued effect of the 2000 technology crash, the
continued effect of 9/11, the cost of the Iraq war and the renewed
questioning as to the validity of the war, and finally the continued
insistence on a war on inflation with the threat of driving interest
rates up yet again at the drop of a hat.
Will it be better soon? It shouldn't be so bad now. Things are
improving but only very slowly. Industry has very little confidence to
invest at the moment. The US economy continues to be driven by consumer
spending which has got somewhat weaker. Until industrial spending
starts driving more of the economy, it's not likely to improve much.
Personally, I think the US could easily continue in this state for a
couple years more.
