Default Advise re common law/PR

Hello All!

Just wanted to ask for your advice on something.Myself and my common law partner came to canada in Dec 2008 on a working holiday visa from Ireland. We love it here. My parter managed to get a positive LMO as his work is more specific than mine and as a result both of us were issued with a new 1 year work visa.

We had both agreed that we would like to apply for PR if the LMO/new permit application was successful.

The problem is that we have been fighting a lot recently. What i want to know- is it possible to apply for PR separately or do we have to do it as a couple? We want to work things out but i'm scared that if we don't (i.e. if we break up) then i may lose my chance to continue living here as my current permit was issued due to me being his common law partner.

Any advice?

1. You can apply separately, but do you qualify that is the question.
2. CIC won't lift your current work permit, but will not extend it if you breakup.
