New Citizenship Bill

On October 31, 2002, Minister Coderre tabled the proposed Canadian
Citizenship Act (Bill C-18) in the House of Commons.

This proposed legislation will update the 1977 Act by reasserting the
rights and freedom of Canadians, reinforcing the responsibilities
associated with being Canadian and by underlining the importance of a
strong commitment to Canada.

NO NEWS AFTER THAT. WHAT IS GOING ON? KILLED?

Bill C-18 is still being considered in the House of Commons.
It's had first and second reading (formalities during which no
debate occurs), and it's currently in the hands of the Commons'
committee on citizenship and immigration. Parliament is on its
summer recess right now, until mid-September.

You should keep in mind that talk of overhauling the Citizenship
Act has been in the works for many years. Bill C-18 is the third
in a series of proposals to rewrite the Citizenship Act over the
past five years; the two earlier bills got stalled in committee
and never became law. So it's really anyone's guess when -- or
even if -- Bill C-18 will ever be enacted into law.
