Default 2/5-year rule - exceptions?

Hope to land close to end of visas to give us more flexibility with the 2/5-year rule (we can't go permanently until 2013), should one of us need to return to UK for any emergencies. Just wondering if there is such a thing as a compassionate extension to this rule, should one of us have to come back for a sick relative?

We are leaving ourselves around 4 months to play with in addition to the 2 years, but want to make sure we cover all options.

Any info gratefully recieved.

There is an appeal to the IAD (Immigration Appeal Division) on loss of residency status, but no guarantee that sickness of a relative would cut it.
