If you want to follow up and make calls you could get a Canada calls package from Skype it's about £14 for 3 months unlimited landlines and mobiles (cell).
Also have you tried networking via linkedin? Try to set up a good linkedin profile connect with people and join groups that reflect on your job. An example is I joined the Vancouver insurance professionals group and managed to pick up some contacts from that. Also be prepared to jump on a plane and do good old fashion walking the streets, meet people for coffee and drop into company's and hand over your résumé in person.

Hope that helps

Thanks for the information. I have joined LinkedIn and will make my contacts and groups a little more specific. With regards to getting on a plane and getting out there, I think I will plan to do this in the summer and create meetings prior to my departure. In the mean time I will be attending a WorkingIn event coming soon. With this I hope to meet prospective employers and get general info from Canadian attendees.

Just another query, does anybody have reason to believe that Construction/Project Manager may not be on FSW list for this coming April? I understand the title may not be to that effect, however I would have thought the role may be covered under a broader category.

Once again, thank you for all your help now and in the future, it is very much appreciated.

Just hope I can make something click to allow the move to materialise.

Kind regards

It hasn't been on the list for 3 yrs, so my guess personally is that it won't be, especially as construction was hit in the recession.

But maybe CIC will surprise us all and put lots of unexpected occupations on there!

Here's an article about a report produced by one of Canada's major banks. It concerns occupations in shortage and those in surplus.

Thanks for quick replies.

looking at that CIBC list (thanks Auld Yin), then maybe there is a chance.

Without annoying anyone is there a link somewhere to previous lists? I feel that I have seen 2012's and I could relate my position to an occupation on it.

I will do another search in the mean time.

Thank you all once again.

Kind regards

Amy, Hi again.

Thanks for that, I think I was incorrect. I will complete the FSW forms and hope for the occupation to appear on the new list prior to sending. Should it not appear, I think I would be right in not sending it all. To which then I will make the effort of making the trip out there to meet potential employers.

Its amazing how things work, but in a way its better they only accept people who can help for the greater good.

Thanks

To be honest when I have looked for work on Indeed, workoplolis, glass door, monster ca etc and can not say I have seen a huge amount of project management/construction roles. It's not to say there are not any out there, its just to make you aware that it could be an uphill battle.

For Project Management/Construction - I know there are lots of such jobs in Van at the moment. Not sure if this is where you are looking?

Afternoon guys.

I have searched them sites and a few more and have found an overwhelming amount of work is available in the Vancouver area. Like I said in a previous post it seems as though emails do not get you anywhere. I have taken Amy's advice along with other contributors on the forum and called companies straight up. I have been able to pin point actual individuals at a few companies some very helpful and others "too busy to talk", which is fair enough to be honest.

At this current moment I am in the process of attending a WorkingIn event in Manchester and also at the same time calling a couple of companies as often as I can to be able to send resumes/cv's to an individual rather than a info@ addresses.

If FSW does not work out for myself I will be steaming ahead with coffee meets and lunches. However I don't drink coffee and am practically vegan! Lol help.

Regards

Hello SSS84,

I admire your determination, but if your occupation doesn't appear on the new FSW visa list due out in April, how will you ever be able to work in Canada - apart from a working holiday depending on your age?

No company can offer you a job unless your occupation is on the FSW list, or they can prove there is not a Canadian who can do the job which necessitates them to apply to their state government for a labour market opinion (LMO) process.

I'm just not sure what good actually going over and meeting companies/organisations will do unless you fit an occupation on the new list? Unless i'm missing something??

We're waiting to see if the IT occupations listed in the NOC (which was meant to form the basis of the new FSW list!) appear on the list. If not, we don't see a way in for us as we're over the age limit for working holiday visas.

Good luck to you all and fingers crossed!

Hi Petal.

I understand what you are saying and appreciate your concerns. My thought is that if the FSW does not work for me, I will try to find work out there, obtaining work permits etc, and then maybe go under the CEC route by working for 12months (minimum I think), and continuing from there.

Not sure if I am correct with the above though. I am 28 and have been working since graduation as a Contracts/Project Manager in construction, so nearly 7 years of experience, not that UK experience counts.

In Honesty, I just hope those who apply and wish to make a change to their lives have the opportunity to do so. I have no doubt that the lazy and sponging members of our society who are content with their lifestyles here, have any intention of making a change. Whilst those who wish to get away from the negativity of our society will have to strain and struggle to free themselves of this 'oppression'.

Sorry last paragraph is just an opinion, and not meant as offensive to anyone.

Regards

Hi SSS84,

Yes you're definately in a good position to do a working holiday and then hopefully still be able to change to the CEC route to PR if your skills are still in shortage by that point. It's all a real gamble isn't it, but all you can do is keep your eyes peeled and go for it if you have an in-road!

Have you considered Australia as Construction project managers are on their skilled occupation list (Anzco 133111)? Although this may be further away than you want to move, but I just wanted to make sure you're aware there is an opportunity for you there! As these opportunities can be short-lived when lists change and occupations drop off them once the quotas are reached (especially for state sponsorship)!

Best Wishes,

Petal

Hi Petal. Thank you for the heads up. Although prospects in oz would be greater than here, unfortunately I dont have any desire to go there. I have a lot of close family members in BC and would feel happier there.
