Questions in the title.
Are you being one or the other or a bit of both?
( I would point out if you choose Hungarian then you already missed Santa ( Mikulas) ;-) and no tree until Christmas eve!

Which ever you choose I wish you a Happy One.

Trying for a British Christmas for me, in as far as I can without easy access to all the normal British things. Will be trying the Hungarian one next time.

A little surprised no easy access to mince pies, but then thats part of the learning curve. Mrs thought of bringing over with her on the 22nd in a carry on bag. Good thinking but have to wonder what state they will be in when they get here!

Anyway, a happy Christmas to one and all.

Don't mention Mince pies to Hungarians, they think they are full of meat.

Ermm - originally mince pies did contain meat. My son who really likes to cook found an old recipe - with meat - and followed that. We were a bit dubious but they were actually very nice.

Oh and to get back to the thread title having a Hungarian wife we have always (35 years or so) had 2 Christmas celebrations, 24th and 25th often with different bits of the extended family.

We're having an English Christmas with some English neighbours. The tree and dec's are up but we'll also be having stuffed cabbage, maybe on Boxing Day so our English friends can try that.

I will be having an Ebenezer Scrooge type Christmas, although probably without any ghosts! I don't do decorations, cards, presents etc. but do indulge a bit in nice food and booze. If I knew of anything I would quite like to do something practical for a children or animal charity but would not know how to find out about such activities.

My kind of Christmas!
Unfortunately with 5 chimneys I can't stop the Fat Man in Red getting in, and now the Baby Jesus is muscling in on the act too.
But irrespective of where I live I am still British, so no presents until the 25th. Then 'proper' Christmas dinner at lunch time just to add confusion,

Warning. Don't give Hungarians the 'brown sauce', once they taste gravy they get totally addicted, All Sunday lunches now have to include a ridiculous amount of gravy.
The supermarkets are overflowing with Brussel spouts, I thought this was an English thing, apparently not.

Christmas Day will be British but it's likely it will kick off with a couple of shots of palinka. That's if my wife brings some back from Hungary. We will probably open one present each on Christmas eve.

Tree up early this year as we had friends over & their kids wanted to see it. Dinner & presents Christmas Eve, with Unicum tó settle the stomach!

Don't want Christmas. Am too tired and work is bonkers. Going through the motions for the kids but I have no real interest in it at all this year.

Suppose it will be Hungarian if anything as I will be just drinking Palinka.

Sorry to hear that, but on the bright side if you are busy working then you don't have to listen to Heart TV (and others) playing non-stop Xmas hits over and over and over and...

Guess who delivered our Tesco groceries in UK? A hungarian! Wife told me about him a few weeks ago. He asked my wife if she was Hungarian because her name is Agnes like his mother's.

It's been decided! We're going full on Hunglish with töltött káposzta on the 24th and turkey etc on the 25th with plenty of pálinka and Unicum thrown in for good measure :)

Hello all,


Together with my wife, kids and mother-in-law we will be having a traditional Hungarian lunch on the 24th opening presents afterwards. On the 25th we will pop to my parents and have a turkey dinner with all the trimmings and give/receive their presents.


Tree went up last week. We used to put it up Christmas eve, even in the UK, but it was too hectic at the last minute and we all enjoy looking at it so why not have it up earlier.


Miss shop bought mince pies - can't seem to make them as nice here.

I have just been informed the plan has changed for this year.
The Hungarian contingent around the table will be going traditional, watery soup with inedible bits of fish floating in it followed by the wrapped cabbage thingy and tripe.

Meanwhile I will be sitting at the end of the table with a lovely fat golden roasted chicken with roast spuds and all the trimmings, which I only have to share with the cat.
I certainly will not be envious of them, how they are going to feel remains to be seen.

We opened a couple of presents yesterday to follow the Hungarian tradition. Couldn't help but laugh as my sister-in-law gave me a T-shirt with the image of a blue deer. This is an ongoing family joke about one of my first trips to Hungary with my Hungarian wife. This all started when I commented about an ornament which was of a blueish grey deer. I suspect my wife didn't translate the grey bit and ever since the Hungarian side of my family have made jokes about blue (kek) deer (szarvas)!!!! Suffice to say .... Have some duck for today (got from work and the boss let me off the bill so that was nice!!). Presents all done lst night. Just an overtired toddler and a moody 4 and a half year old to deal with today.......... At least it's warm!

As I suspected the Hungarian faction decided my roast spuds,veg and chicken lavished with gravy was far more appealing than tripe.

So I am supposed to find room in my freezer for 2 kilos of uneaten tripe, I just know it will probably still be in there next Xmas, but at least they ate their stuffed cabbage.

So that's Christmas done and dusted.

I most definitely do not have a dog, too much responsibility to look after. One cat is enough, if I go away for a few days she simply goes to the neighbours to eat.
She turned her nose up at the tripe, probably too much Paprika and spice for her liking.

As happy as I would be to give it to a dog or even the rubbish bin, I'm told I must keep it because it is a 'delicacy' - their word NOT mine!

There are lots of things that are considered a delicacy e.g. pigs balls, brains (often served as a brain omelette or on toast), bone marrow,........... It's just a decision of how to deal with such 'delicacys when presented with them.

Finest bone marrow I have had so far was in Warsaw, haven't tried it here yet.

I got a joint of beef in Lidl for Christmas day. They did not have much selection so I ended up with a piece of neck (one of the tougher cuts) but I braised it in red wine and it turned out both tender and tasty. Even the spuds had more flavour than normal as I had cooked them in the roasting tin with the beef. I usually mash them with sour cream but I had run out of that so I used vajkrem. I will make Cornish pasties with the rest of the beef, once I get to the shops and buy more onions and carrots.

All my left-overs were diced and fried for a traditional Boxing day Bubble and squeak with pickle.
It was nice to have a dozen people to enjoy Christmas, but it is so nice to get rid of them so I can eat what i like when I like.

We had the relatives around - 15 at the table

2 geese, suitably stuffed - carcasses remain for the soup pot

wine flowed like the biblical flood

Christmas pud and mince pies

coffee and beigli (Hungarys antidote to mince pies !)

With not much time since we arrived, we had duck, chicken & beautiful roasties. piles of veg, roast parsnips, cauli etc
All washed down with copious amounts of Hungarian wine.

Bring on New Year.
