You were unlucky.

Quite a few years back I was in a hire car with mother-in-law in the back & heavy snow on the M7 to Budapest. I was inexperienced, over confident in the snow and driving far too quickly. We were in the middle lane when I lost control & we ended up skidding between two lorries off the side of the road down a bank (luckily no barriers at that point) The heavy snow acted as a cushion so little damage to the car, the one large dent could be pushed back out.

People were wonderfully kind, stopping & helping, pushing us up the bank & back on the road. We drove on to Budapest. It was only later that we realised how dangerous in had been & how lucky we were!

The lesson has been learned & I am very careful now if driving in rutted snow & ice.
