It's been explained already:
There are sometimes local rules re animals.
In Héviz eg pigs are forbidden of course but also roosters.
Here near Esztergom where we moved 3 years ago roosters are allowed - even larger birds like ducks or geese are ok. Near our lake you can see an Emu!
I'm not so sure about pigs, you see one or two near empty houses sometimes but they might well be illegal - if nobody tells the authorities ...
OT re mangalica:
Their fat is marvelous, my wife uses it for baking etc if she can get it.
And their "szüszpecsenye" is the best. We always order a few before our German relatives come and when I still drove a car I would bring some to them on every visit

I'm going to give mangalica pigs a go. My wife has just told me she sometimes uses mangalica pig fat for baking and roasting!

Do you know anything about pig keeping? Where are you going to keep them?

Auchan sells mangalica pork, it's usually in a separate refrigerated area from the normal pork,

I've recently bought deer meat and wild boar meat from Auchan.

Prices very reasonable compared to beef, actually.

I just fancied a change.

I must add wild boar to our next shopping trip to Auchan. Due to my left hand wrist injury cannot drive so we shop at our Coop Super Plus!

Prices very reasonable compared to beef - Actually it should be much cheaper than beef because the hunted game has very few of the overheads that mainstream meat has.

And with very little feed cost, no periodic vets inspection, no infrastructure costs, no daily maintenance costs and no land costs and shot as part of someone's hobby. It should be much cheaper.

Spoken as one who suffers damage caused by the game on a regular basis, gets no compensation and provides feed for them free of charge without any way to get recompense.

We retired from that part of the enterprise last year. - We still have a large veggie plot and orchard. Both of which suffer game damage despite electric fencing. Our pasture is now rented out and the tenant now has the joy of seeing the game eating the grass that should be for his cattle. Over the years we have lost about 25% of our pasture due to boar digging from which pasture never properly recovers and we are not allowed to reseed it as we are in an environmentally protected area and National Park.

We're in Duna-Ipoly, I like it, ie the Pilis hills. Thousands of Budapestis come out at the weekend to hike, admire the views, cycle, ride their motorbikes, trek up the Dobokoko etc - but I live here every day.

One for Wolfi - can you pls recommend a couple of restaurants in & around Esztergom? My wife is back in Hungary in 4 weeks - currently on daughter duty, who's taking her A-levels. My eldest son want to go over the bridge to Slovakia, which suits me fine provided the ancient car makes it - I always used to like popping over for a pint of Slovakian beer but didn't manage it the last 10 years, so his suggestion sounds great. If you know any decent pubs on Slovakian side, also much appreciated for any tips.

Hi Bill!
We don't go to restaurants often - my (Hungarian ...) wife is a fantastic cook but sometimes we visit the Piizzeria Pala on the main road to Dorog.
We also enjoy the Spejz, an Italian restaurant directly on the Danube just outside Esztergom.
In the city there are several quite good but also expensive restaurants. You would have to look them up on the net because I forgot their names and menues.
Just across the Danube via the Maria bridge in Sturovo (Slovakia) we found the Casablanca (yes, named after the movie ...) also very nice with good food - and Pilsner Urquell straight from the tap!!!
And nearby is a Slovak Lidl supermarket with good prices and offers.- but prices are in €.
