Roughing it in Hungary Documentary
Just came across this documentary on YouTube - An interesting (and in places very funny) documentary about a couple who bought a 3,000 GBP farmhouse in Gadács (between Balaton and Pécs) living on 6 GBP per day.
As my HU GF points out, 6 GBP a day, or even 3 GBP a day each, is more than enough taking into consideration they only have a 1 GBP per month water bill. In Szeged I can buy 12 chicken drumsticks for less than 1,000 HUF from Tesco. So what are they spending their 6 GBP on? 6 GBP per day or 180 GBP per 30-day month would make the locals happy. In other words, their lifestyle (after they bought some chickens, rabbits, etc) should mean 6 GBP is plenty?
Also, Ben Fogle said the couple have to drive 2 hours away to get Julia's medication - Uh? Why couldn't they drive to Kaposvár or Pécs? Kaposvár is a medical hub.
Anyway, the chicken fiasco was very funny. Now you know why you need the basics of the language!

Are they still there?

Apparently they are now doing a "work away" scheme.....and are getting five star reviews; which I imagine could of turned out to be a good business venture for them. They get the house repaired....

Thanks for the link Szeged. I thoroughly enjoyed the programme.

The first link does not seem to work but I watched the second video. My village is in Zala but is very close to Somogy county, so I thought they might be relatively local to me. Sadly, their village is actually 120km from me, so a bit far to nip over for the odd haircut!

It probably would be an odd haircut - Her scissors would definitely be blunt by now

Sounds like they went to Budapest. They probably just didn't know which local hospital or doctor could help with her rare condition. If they only just got their deeds (I never got deeds, just a contract??) they would not have residence status and therefore not be able to join the state healthcare system.

Good Point, Fidobsa. However, even how dumb they were to just 'up and leave' for Hungary, with a rare health condition I would of thought they would of at least checked up on what hospitals were available and either moved closer to one or stayed in the uk a little longer until they investigated further about Hungary in general. I do not think their lives were that bad in the uk that they couldn't wait until they had done a little homework. There are other places to buy cheap farm/land in Hungary (i.e. Miskolc). Let's put it this way, if I had a rare condition I wouldn't live 2 hours away from the specialist hospital.

Just to add - my HU GF reckons those in Kaposvár and Pécs would be able to help and even order specialist medication if possible. Hopefully the couple have inestigated this route. Furthermore, my HU GF also points out that it is pretty stupid to live in a place with not many amenities/facilities whereby when you become seriously ill (perhaps in the middle of a freezing winter with no petrol in your van for hospital trips) you are in the s@!t.

We saw the same kind of settler coming to Bulgaria in the early years of this century. Many were totally clueless and incapable of integration. Ability to learn the language and communicate is crucial.

To be fair, this particular couple do sound as though they've integrated quite well.

Not well enough to know how to deal with a life-threatening medical condition ?
