Just about to return my tax forms and want to make sure they arrive. can someone please tell me what to ask for at the post office which is the equivalent of registered post.

Hi Cathyg.. The first thing I would do is photo copy/re-print the documents you are about to send so you have a good clear copy.

Registered post in Hungarian is ? ajánlott postai küldemény

They will know what you mean, but if you cant speak Hungarian then just print this sentence out and give it to the post lady/man.

Ajálva szeretném küldeni ezt a levelet Angliába...mint ajánlott postai küldemény..

You will have to fill out a small green slip which I think is in English too...

Ajánlott is just proof of posting, and as my solicitor once said 'not worth a light'
What you need is

Tértivevényes ajánlott

which is recorded delivery.
With the first you have proof that you gave it to the post office, after that anything can happen.
With Tértivevényes ajánlott the letter is signed for when it is delivered and you get back a card that shows by whom and when the letter was taken over by the addressee. This is what should be used for all thing official and important e.g. tax returns.
The forms for Tértivevényes ajánlott are available at the post office and our post office will help those who have trouble with Hungarian forms.

Hi Cathyg. Registered post...ajánlott postai küldemény is proof of posting as your thread stated. Tértivevényes ajánlott is also proof of posting but it gets signed for at the other end and you receive proof of delivery.

ajánlott postai küldemény - In the UK this is known as the old fashioned Recorded Delivery service.

The post office takes the item from you, stamps your form as proof of posting from that post office, and then sends your item to the recipient with no guarantee of actual delivery and no confirmation of delivery. You only have confirmation from the post office at the time of sending (the stamped form). You also get a item-number for your item (printed onto the form). This is good for non-important items.

Tértivevényes ajánlott - In the UK this is known as the modern Signed-For service. You get proof of posting from the post office (the stamped form with printed item-number on it) plus a card in the post a few days later to state that your item was signed for, etc.

It is also worth noting that Hungarians rarely used Signed-For (as a customer). Signed-for mail is normally sent by a company to get proof you received something, evidence you still live at that address, etc. Ironically, the tax office uses Signed-For.

Another thing to note is that the tax office and other official bodies, as well as big companies in general, will use a P.O.Box address to receive mail.

As maybe but I would use the Tértivevényes ajánlott as this is the only way you can show that the documents arrived and on time. If fact you could also just put them in an envelope with stamp and stick them in the nearest post box, they would also almost certainly arrive safely, but I wouldn't do that with a tax form or any other document that had consequences for its non arrival or late arrival.

Maybe this is a test of how well-integrated you are. Can you use the post office ? WITHOUT taking a grown-up along to help you !
