Petrol Propelled Lawnmower
Has anyone got recommendations for a petrol propelled lawnmower? Both for the best (price no issue but must be worth the cost) and best value. Needs to be suitable for uneven ground and for plot around 600-700 sq.m.

Re: Petrol Propelled Lawnmower
I bought a Honda HRX537 this April and it is a good one, self propelled. bag or mulch if you like 21 inch cut 6hp motor and adjustable cutting height and speed. A new one will set you back around 300-330,000 Forints depending upon the variant you get or you may find a used one on Jofogas. Easy start usually 1st pull. Best mower I ever bought. I had one like it back home also never a problem.

Well, if you want to spend so much - Honda is a good brand.
But a smaller and cheaper machine might be enough? In any case you should look around - is there someone near who repairs these things and which brands to they know? That can be decisive. There shoud be good machines for maybe 150 000 HUF. |

There shoud be good machines for maybe 150 000 HUF. You get what you pay for in power equipment. You don't have to spend as much as I did but I learned a long time ago being cheap almost always cost you more in the end. My motto, buy once, cry once. I think the Honda machines are better units all around when compared to the current models from Viking/Stihl, Husqvarna etc. Some of the older now discontinued Viking units like the 755KS were good also but seems Viking(now Stihl) had discontinued the professional grade models and makes only high priced low to mid grade home owner units. The key to longevity of any mower is regular oil service of the engine at least 2 or 3 times a season if you use yours a lot like I do. I cut about 1250m2 every 8-10 days during the growing season with mine. |

you can also get a similar model Honda with electric start. (Honda HRG536 VL) which means that SWMBO would be able to cut the grass

If the ground is uneven wouldn't it be easier to use a petrol strimmer?

We've always had both - especially for some corners the trimmer is easier to use.

Re: Petrol Propelled Lawnmower
I guess that those"strimmers" (is that their real name?) were of the large two-handed variety with two coils of plastic too which have to be carried on a strap/belt around your shoulders, not the simple ones.
For these large machines there are strict safety rules re clothing and wearing safety goggles - they can be really dangerous! At or house near the Balaton we also had a guy who'd do this for us with his assistant - ten minutes and the grass between the street and the walkway would be gone, very efficient. |

Yes, they are called strimmers. |

Agree with you those larger petrol strimmers can be very dangerous. No way would I try using one.
Yes, they are called strimmers. Lawn mowers can collect grass cuttings, are quicker than strimmers and are more environmentally friendly (they are 4 stroke not 2 stroke like strimmers) Unfortunately IMO 700m2 is not really big enough to justify a ride on mower - but....... There is a place for both as they do different jobs. For what it is worth I have both a lawn mower and a couple of strimmers and wouldn't be without any of them. The commercial size I use with a blade and a saw disk but I prefer to use a chain saw or the tractor mounted cuttter rather than the saw disk on a strimmer. |
Re: Petrol Propelled Lawnmower
Get a couple of goats instead, the added benefit is milk during grass season and meat in the winter
