Moped/50cc scooter Laws and Regs query.
I am thinking about buying a small scooter or moped just for around town.
Are they actually registered? none seem to sport a number plate.
IF this is so how does it work if I stick it in the pickup and take it camping in a different country?
Are crash helmets a legal requirement in/out of urban areas?

Mopeds (less than 50cc) are not registered and have no requirement for number plates or MOTs. There is a requirement for insurance where the vin (frame number) is used for identification
Crash hats are needed on outside areas,I'm not sure about inside areas but I started driving motor bikes 50 years ago and I have never gone without a bone dome and never would!
Your insurance co. would know about using it in another EU country - if no one here can advise

If it is only for scooting around Hungary (cities centres, towns and villages), you could consider the bicycle moped - it has a pedals on it for when the battery runs out. Many older people use them in Szeged to do their shopping, etc.
They do not need an helmet (off-road) as they use them on pavements and cycle lanes and countryside roads (i.e. on A roads). They cost, if I remember rightly, around 80,000 ft brand new and around 40,000 to 50,000 ft second-hand (depending on their condition of course).

I will defo get a 49cc scooter when I finally move over. What's the deal with quad bikes? Any specific regulations. I think I'd prefer one of these with a rack on the back to carry my beer home from Auchan!!!

Quad bikes can come under the motor bike or car rules regarding engine size, power etc.. but not all quads can be street legal, it depends upon the EU type approval. Quad use on roads has bad press due to the high accident record (but IMO that is more likely due to the plonkers driving them) You can also now use 'mopedauto' (moped cars) which are a restricted vehicles that are limited to 45km/hour and have a 5 year MOT requirement. (e.g. Aixam 400 or Amica Luna 50 - there are others) and the driving licence depends upon type.
