John, my father escaped Hungary in the late 60's and was grateful that fellow European and Colony countries offered refuge. Assimilation was no problem due to similar culture, religion and work ethic. I am dismayed at the minimal refuge offered from their Arab/Muslim brethren. Europe would have no problem in supplying aid in this case. The no-go zones in Europe should be a clear indicator of the differences in culture, Sweden’s increase in crime and staggering rape statistics attest to this.
As you indicated only 1.3 million Hungarians were taken in and given refuge in the western "liberal" world, a finite amount! With the floodgates beginning to open, at how many millions do we draw the line? I fear for the current situation in Europe as I see an increase of popularity in far right political parties.

You are of course correct that it's a difficult and different problem. What I find difficult to stomach is mainstream politicians pandering to the racists rather than standing their ground and fighting for "liberal" western values. Perhaps they are trying to stop the votes going to the hard right?

We might also try to remember that while there are too many fundamentalist hard line Muslims around now encouraged by the Saudi version of the religion - there is also a kindly gentle form of Islamic tradition that has lived side by side with Christianity for generations. All Muslims are not "rapists" !!

A little Christian kindness would be good to see.

I have a colleague who came to England as a baby in 1956. She still has strong links to Hungary. I sometimes ask her about the pronunciation of some Hungarian words.

Default Re: Migration

Let's take a look at the video that started this topic. Here's the transcript of what Ezra Levant says, with my comments.

0.00

I want to show you an incredible video of Angela Merkel. She's the Chancellor of Germany.

So far so good. :-)

0.07

She's the one who said that there should be no limits for immigration from the Moslem Middle East to Germany.

No she didn't. Not in this clip, and not anywhere else.

0.12

She started the recent stampede, ...

Merkel – specifically the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) – undoubtedly exacerbated the flow of refugees to Germany by tweeting on 19 September that the Dublin Agreement would no longer be enforced for Syrian citizens. Whether this caused the "stampede" is debatable; other factors also increased the numbers arriving, such as intensification of hostilities in Syria and, particularly, the substantial drop in humanitarian aid reaching the refugee camps in the Middle East.

0.14

by calling for 800,000 migrants, ...

Merkel never said that. Not in this clip, or anywhere else.

0.17

first come first served, ...

There is no cap on the number of asylum-seekers. Applications for asylum in Germany take on average 5.4 months to process (www.welt.de/politik/deutschland/article145595071/So-wird-die-Dauer-von-Asylverfahren-verschleiert.html), so "first come first served" is nonsense.

0.18

no application forms necessary, ...

Formal registration is still required by asylum-seekers, including Syrians.

0.20

no proof of any danger to your lives necessary ...

If you can prove that you are a Syrian citizen, your life is assumed to be in danger and you are automatically granted asylum, so this part is true (it remains to be seen how long that will continue to be the case).

0.23

and anyone who can make it immediately gets thousands of dollars in special benefits ...

Refugees initially receive accommodation – typically a bed in a requisitioned school sports hall shared with several hundred others – and, at the time this clip was made, an allowance of €143 per adult per month. A change is currently in progress to replace this cash benefit with benefits in kind.

0.28

plus access to Germany's existing welfare state

Refugees have access to certain services; their children for example are required to attend German schools, like German children, and they receive free medical care, although at a much more basic level than any regular German resident.

Even being generous to Levant, it is a gross exaggeration to describe this as "immediately getting thousands of dollars in special benefits plus access to Germany's existing welfare state".

0.38

One hundred thousand migrants, overwhelmingly young Moslem men, have come in the last month alone ...

Since the main countries of origin are Syria and Afghanistan (both with overwhelmingly Moslem populations) and Eritrea (about half of whose population is Moslem) and since young men are those most able to make the journey, this is not surprising. According to the statistics, approximately two-thirds of the refugees are male (www.faz.net/aktuell/wirtschaft/wirtschaftspolitik/deutschlands-fluechtlinge-in-grafiken-13867210.html). The preponderence of young males is due to the fact that the fittest are most likely to make it, and to the fact that families have often sent their fittest member on ahead. The proportion of women and families arriving is now increasing, as expected.

0.37

to take her up on her offer ...

There is no "offer", see above.

0.38

In one single day, more than 10,000 men arrived in the city of Munich alone – imagine that.

We will have to imagine how many women, since he doesn't tell us, but yes.

0.45

And if you dare to question this, well you're called a Nazi, which in Germany tends to shut people up pretty quickly.

Germany isn't a totalitarian state. Some people are not questioning the government's policy, some are. Some of the latter are being called Nazis, some are not. Some almost certainly are Nazis. But there is nothing to stop people in Germany expressing their reservations regarding the government's policy – as indeed is demonstrated precisely in this clip. A significant proportion of MPs in Merkel's own party are critical of her policy (www.bz-berlin.de/deutschland/merkels-fluechtlingskurs-kritik-aus-eigenen-reihen-immer-lauter).

0.51

Well let me show you an incredible video. It's almost four minutes long, but literally every minute is amazing. It's a woman in Germany, she looks sweet, frankly looks like a progressive liberal, asking Angela Merkel in a nutshell, aren't you putting our country at risk? Here, take a look.

To me, she neither looks nor sounds like a progressive liberal, but never mind.

2.30

OK, she says that terrorism is primarily happening over there in Iraq and Syria and Libya, and I guess that's true enough, it's not anarchy in Europe yet, like it is in the Middle East, but there have been plenty of deadly terrorist Moslem attacks in Europe, and many more foiled terrorist attacks, from the Madrid subway bombings, to the London subway bombings, to the attack on Paris's Charlie Hébdo magazine

Whilst there's no disputing that there have been Moslem terrorist attacks in Europe, it's somewhat far-fetched to suggest that we are heading for anarchy ("it's not anarchy in Europe yet").

Any Moslem terrorist attack is one too many, but the number of Moslem terrorist attacks in Europe has been tiny, as have the numbers killed, compared to other violent causes of death (car accidents, violent crime, etc.), or for that matter right-wing attacks in Germany against refugees and refugee shelters.

2.56

Fine, it's true that most terrorist attacks, numerically, happen in the Middle East, but then did you see that, she blamed Germany and blamed Europe because some Moslems who were in Europe go back to the Middle East to fight with the Islamic State? She actually is saying that Germany helped cause the Islamic State terrorism because Germany took in some Moslem terrorists who then went back to the Middle East to commit terrorism.

Levant has completely (deliberately or through ignorance) missed the point that Merkel is making here. That is: that many of the young people committing terrorist acts in the Middle East grew up in Europe. They were not, as he puts it, "taken in by Germany", and then returned to the Middle East to commit acts of terrorism. They were raised in Europe and Europe contributed to their upbringing, and – in Merkel's view – Europe can't therefore say that the problem is nothing to do with Europe. The background to this is that Germany must make greater efforts to impart its own values to its residents of migrant background.

Levant is not obliged to agree with that view, but if he wants to disagree with Merkel he should disagree with what she actually says. It's not a question of blame, but of responsibility (a conflation that extremists of all shades are quick to make).

3.24

She actually blames Europe for the Islamic State.

See above.

3.28

Here, watch some more.

(...)

3.44

Look, this lady in the audience is afraid, she's afraid of terrorism as we know it, afraid that amongst these hundreds of thousands of unscreened Moslem men are more terrorists to come, and all Merkel has to say, fifteen seconds, is – well – fear is not a good advisor. Don't listen to fear. That's it! Fifteen-second answer, just don't be afraid, just a little cliché, no real answers to real threats, don't listen to fear? Well how about listening to warnings, from the Islamic State itself, that says they're going to sneak in with these migrants? How about listening to evidence, how about to real Moslem terror plots being discovered in Europe every week? Don't listen to them?

Why doesn't Angela Merkel answer any of that? Quite simple: because it wasn't explicitly in the question. The question is very vaguely formulated and concerns protecting Europe, and specifically Europe's culture, from Islamization, i.e. the spread of Islam. There is no mention whatsoever in the question of terrorists or terrorism.

Essentially, Levant criticizes Merkel for not explicitly answering a question that wasn't explicitly asked. Ironically, because she does in fact say (at 7.18) that Germany must prepare itself in the face of the terrorist danger.

4.24

Here's more of Angela Merkel.

(...)

5.03

So now she's suggesting that "Islam belongs to Germany".

This shows spectacular ignorance of German current affairs. The statement "Islam belongs to Germany" was made by the previous German President, Christian Wulff, back in January, and reflects the view – also expressed in this clip by Angela Merkel – that given that Germany is home to 4 million Moslems, Islam is now part of German life. There has been ongoing and intense public discussion in Germany of what the phrase actually means, and to what extent it holds true, since then. Google returns 46,000 hits for "Der Islam gehört zu Deutschland".

An article on the subject, and containing Wulff's statement in context, can be found here:

www.deutschlandfunk.de/der-islam-gehoert-zu-deutschland-die-geschichte-eines-satzes.1783.de.html?dram:article_id=308619

The discussion hinges on the nuance of "belongs to". Several politicians have openly affirmed the statement. Others have rejected it, notably Joachim Gauck, the current President, who made a point of saying that Islam (the religion) does not belong to Germany, but that Moslems (individuals practising their religion) do belong to Germany.

5.08

And Germany now belongs to Islam, I presume?

At this point Levant goes from being ignorant to just plain illogical.

One could equally ask this:

Does Judaism belong to Canada?

No, Judaism does not belong to Canada? In that case, what is Ezra Levant doing in Canada?

Yes, Judaism does belong to Canada? So Canada belongs to Judaism, I presume?

That would be anti-Semitic. Besides just plain silly.

5.11

And anyways, she says there are already 4 million Moslems in Germany ...

Yes – there are, and she said it.

5.15

so what are you going to do about it, right?

No – she didn't say "what are you going to do about it". She said that we have four million Moslems in Germany, and Moslems in Germany are therefore a fact of life. The point she is making is clear to anyone who has followed the debate on "der Islam gehört zu Deutschland" since January.

5.16

What? So this lady from the audience said that she is worried about the Islamization of Germany. I know what that means. It means worried about terrorism and violence. But it also means worrying about Sharia law. Worrying about women being put into hijabs and niqabs and burqas. It means worries about a lack of separation between mosque and state.

Levant may think that he knows what it means. However, the German term "Islamisierung" can be interpreted in all manner of different ways. It could mean the imposition of Sharia law, but it could equally simply mean a greater manifestation of Islamic culture in a particular area. More mosques, more women wearing headscarves. And it's quite clear what is meant in this case, because the lady in the audience says (my translation): "... particularly refugees from Syria, and from these countries, more and more people with a Moslem background are coming, and I think that what the gentleman before me was saying includes a lot of fear in Europe about this Islamization" (my emphasis). So here, the use of "Islamization" clearly refers to the arrival of more and more refugees from Syria and similar countries, not to terrorists. Levant may think that they are one and the same, but most Germans don't think that – indeed, would find it ridiculous to think that.

6.26

And Merkel says the solution to this is for this question-asker to go to church more? To look at paintings in a church – that was her advice.

No. Merkel's answer – and remember, Merkel is the daughter of a theologian – is that those who lament the displacement of Christianity by Islam should become more familiar with the religion that they claim to espouse and thereby become more able to discuss it and defend it in discussion with Moslems, in ways that include (but are not limited to) going into a church and discussing a painting hanging there. It wasn't a very eloquent response, but the meaning is quite clear in German.

6.37

Here's a woman – we have no idea if she's Christian at all, saying she's afraid of mass, unlimited, unscreened immigration of young Moslem men ...

No. Here's a woman who didn't actually say any of that – Levant did. Nothing whatsoever in her question about "unlimited", "unscreened", "young" or "men". He repeats this phrase numerous times in his presentation, giving the impression that it's a quote, but the woman in the audience never actually said it.

6.47

and all Merkel says is: she should go to church?

As anyone who watches the clip can see, that's not "all Merkel says".

6.50

What – this isn't a contest between theological abstractions.

That's exactly what it is. This woman is complaining about the Islamization of Germany in terms of the arrival of refugees from the Middle East. Here in Germany, we have religious freedom, so refugees are free to be Moslems, just as existing German residents are free to be Moslems, or to embrace Islam. And if someone doesn't like that and thinks that their Christian heritage deserves protection, the onus is on them to convince Moslems to renounce Islam, or to change their view of Christianity. However difficult that may be, that's the way it is – the German state does not regulate religious practice or the proportion of the population that is allowed to be Moslem.

6.55

This is about the character of the German state itself.

... in which there is freedom of religion, including freedom to practise Islam.

6.59

The public square, the laws, the culture.

Indeed, and we have had millions of Moslems in Germany for decades, and Islam has been manifest in the public space, and our state institutions have survived.

7.01

It's not about what book one reads privately in a house of worship.

Exactly – it's about cross-cultural dialogue of cultural values. Again, Levant has completely missed the point.

7.05

Worried about a hundred thousand Moslem men? Oh, go to a church, read a book, look at a painting.

Nothing in the question about a hundred thousand Moslem men, and gross mis-paraphrasing of the answer, in a tone that is becoming more and more sneering.

7.10

What is she even saying?

Whatever it is, Levant doesn't care, because he's making it up as he goes along.

7.12

Here's some more:

(...)

7.41

OK, so now we have it. It took three minutes for Merkel to get to it, but here it is.

"It took three minutes for Merkel to get to it" – at 3.44 he was complaining about the brevity of her "fifteen-second answer"!

7.46

For her, this isn't about dealing with the facts on the ground.

Which facts, exactly? She was answering a vaguely worded question.

7.50

This isn't about the hundred thousand Moslem migrant men

Levant keeps going on about the hundred thousand Moslem migrant men, but there was nothing in the question about a hundred thousand, or migrants, or men, so no, he's right – this particular answer isn't about the hundred thousand Moslem migrant men.

7.53

she's taken in

Merkel hasn't "taken in a hundred thousand Moslem migrant men". Germany has granted refuge to a large number of asylum-seekers of both genders, all ages, and various religions, pending their applications for asylum.

7.54

At this point he really loses it. The rest is a rambling, speculative, conjectural, far-fetched interpretation of what he thinks Merkel might actually think. Suffice to say that you have to bend Merkel's words all the way to Syria and back to get the kind of meaning he attributes to them. But for the sake of completeness, here's the rest:

This is about some sort of national psychological therapy for her, as German Chancellor. Did you see that? She's saying, sure, jihadists may be evil. But who are we Germans to speak? Don't forget how evil we were in the past. And not just the far past, but the recent past. Don't be haughty and arrogant, she actually said. So keeping Germany's culture of liberal secularism is haughty and arrogant, she says. Defending against unscreened migrants is haughty and arrogant, she says, because hey, Germany did awful things to the Jews and to others, so shut up about awful things that Moslem extremists want to do to us. This isn't a public policy, this is a personal therapy. I note that Merkel herself doesn't have any kids. And neither did the last German Chancellor, either. They don't have a personal future. Now maybe it was for personal reasons, I don't know. But the last two German reasons have, for whatever reason, no stake in the future. An amateur psychologist might say they have decided to terminate themselves as a form of ethnic punishment, the ultimate in self-hate? Selbsthass is the special German word for hating yourself – they hate themselves for what they or their parents or their grandparents did, they hate Germany today, because of what Germany was in the '30s and '40s, and so they will not personally build a German future, and anyone who wants to is just haughty and arrogant and has obviously just forgotten Germany's great crimes, and sure, some of these Moslem terrorists are bad, but no worse than Germany was, and anyway she says, Germany is partly to blame for the Islamic State, and why don't you just go to a church and look at a painting. This is crazy. Now, she looks tired in this video, but I don't think she was drunk or delusional, she hasn't corrected these comments, as far as I know, this is Angela Merkel's world view. Germany doesn't belong to the Germans. Germany should be de-Germanified. Germans don't deserve Germany. Any foreigner fresh off a train does. Shut up if you disagree. Don't you know that Germany is guilty, guilty, guilty? Look, I disagree, I'm a Jew, I mean hatred for the Nazis was taught to me from childhood, but I know that Germany today is not Nazi; they're liberal, the grandchildren of the Nazis are not guilty by birth, and even if they were, the solution, the punishment, would not be to let in a million Moslem men, including amongst them today's Nazis, those from radical Islam.

Angela Merkel just read out Germany's official suicide note. The fact that this video is so under-reported tells me that most media, frankly, agree with her.

I invite people to look up Ezra Levant on the Internet. Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ezra_Levant) is a good place to start, but if you don't like Wikipedia, just google him. His own words speak for themselves. This is a man who for example is on public record as saying "These are gypsies, a culture synonymous with swindlers. The phrase gypsy and cheater have been so interchangeable historically that the word has entered the English language as a verb: he gypped me. Gypsies are not a race. They’re a shiftless group of hobos. They rob people blind. Their chief economy is theft and begging. For centuries these roving highway gangs have mocked the law and robbed their way across Europe."

My country – Germany – is expected to receive a million refugees this year. This is the biggest refugee crisis since the Second World War. It needs to be discussed rationally, with reference to facts, and not with the demagogic rhetoric and lies of Ezra Levant.

John,
Pandering to the racists? I agree its a thin line between Nationalism and racism,But for the most it is nationalism i believe.
Its very easy to label someone a racist when they are trying to stand up for their country.

And its Liberal ideals that have got us into this mess!

I lived 20 years in Holland,(you can not get more liberal than Holland)had a son there in 94,that year the dutch government chnged child support, that you only got full payment for your first child and reduced payment for subsequent children. This was partly because of the large families from turkish/morocan immigrants, where mum and dad had returned to their own land leaving eldest daughter to bring up their siblings and sending a good portion of the money over to mum and da each month. It had to stop!
So to stop it the dutch had to include their own people as well.

Demographicaly, this also had an impact, because a working man and woman could not afford to have any more children,Cost of child minders etc etc.
If you go to any large family(4-5+ kids) in the UK,Holland, most of europe you will find that they,ma n pa are not working, they are on the social and the government (we) are bringing up their children!

The same applies to the "Refugees" most dont want to work!they just want money and the easy life that is portrayed to them by the media. They dont have skills, and if they do they can not earn sufficient so the government subsidises them.

And lastly,ä little christian kindness would be good to see?

I have seen lots, without trying to look for it,all of the countrys that these people are predominantley "christian" Do they have to wear a cross to be noticed that they are christian?

And i dont like seeing women beaten and raped because of they clothing and their faith,or just the fact they are women and less than dogs????

I would like to see a rise in the Templars because i think a lot of people have lost direction and their faith in governments and belief in religion.
And a rekindling of The Templar order would give people something to start beleiving in again.Yes, i guese people would try and call it racist,But its not its the CHRISTIAN faith.

I lived for 20 years in Holland with muslims for neighbours, had problems with some and others were great.
But,if when push comes to shove even the good ones will not side with you when there is a problem because they don not want to be chastised by their pears for siding with an infidel.

The favourite word that the supporters of immigration throw out all the time is "racist" The goal of these folks is to shut down their opponents and end all conversation on the matter.

There is nothing wrong with wanting to preserve the racial identity of ones homeland. If that makes me a "Racist" it is a badge I shall wear proudly. The goal of leftist is to destroy everything that is culturally and historically significant about Christian Europe and replace it with the outstanding folks that are headed our way who have no plan to integrate into our society. They plan to replace it with the very things they claim drove them out of their ancestral homelands. If that doesn't awaken you nothing will.

Just one more thing:
Donald Trump has updated Schrödinger’s famous thought experiment by insisting that immigrants exist in a state of both lazing around on welfare whilst simultaneously being out there stealing US jobs.
Sad but funny at the same time ...
Donald Trump warns of Schrödinger’s immigrant who ‘lazes around on benefits whilst simultaneously stealing your job’

Back!Simple isnt it.

This is a post i copied from a vid on you tube where muslims in Finland didnt like the food and they just wanted Money!,to go to the shops and buy their own food.?

They humiliated themselves thinking they could lie their way to northern Europe as "refugees" from the middle east. They say they are refugees, they get refugee status and realize that refugee status mean only simple basics. They are secretly immigrants in their hearts and are now just figuring out their "refugee" lie only gets them so far, only the basics. A tent and basic food and water. No apartment, no clothes, no money and no luxury. If they want to immigrate then follow the correct procedure like everyone else. Not cheat and lie your way into our societies. It's getting cold this time or year Lets see how these middle east liars handle that.

El Nino stated again this year and apparently its the worse than the previous one 6 years ago.And we can expect a severe and prologned winter this year.
Hopefully they will be queuing up to go back,Woohoo!

There is much better way all those whom exit from a war zone and single should be give a choice to join up for 3 years in a coalition Army at the end they should choose to stay or return to their country as did the Polish Freedom Army and I think everyone would thank them for all they did There is capacity to train them and help to bring stability to all at war at present time and end the aggression digger47

The best thing to do with them is send them back where they came from. They are not ever going to be anything but a drain on the entire EU. Military training is the last thing they should get. They are cowards. They fled the war in their own lands. These people are not here to do anything but take what others have worked so hard for their entire lives. Enough of the molly coddling of them.

Views that were regularly expressed by the "Voelkischer Beobachter" are now mainstream and acceptable. I despair. Default position of many is kneejerk Xenophobia and Racism.
