Dear Patrick!
It is with great joy and gratitude that we report to you the results of the past two months, the support provided by the Magyar Élélmiszerbank Egyesület to people in need.
The members of our network saved 1,831,000 kilograms of goods in November and December! Thus, during the holiday season, we were able to donate a total of 524,119 food packages to people and families in difficult circumstances.
By using donations like yours, we were able to ease the burdens of many needy people for at least a few days. Most of them already needed help in the previous years, but unfortunately many of them have been in a state of uncertainty in the past period and asked for our help. We also thank you on their behalf for standing by the Food Bank.

I really like to read that there are groups that help the food challenged with their needs. It is very disheartening that so much food is wasted. When leftover food from restaurants and food shoppes that have expired items can be made available to those in need that is a good thing. Is this group a nationwide organization or just a local group? Do they offer collection for donations? If they have a web site maybe you can share it with us.

Someone in our village organised surplus food from people in he village or anything they wanted to donate to those in need over Christmas.
We added a few goodies but next year we're planning to add more stuff.

Sorry, I should have posted the website! Please see below. It is a nationwide organisation, their modus operandi has been to solicit food donations from all the supermarkets, etc and they seem to have been most successful in this. I don't know about (physical) collections, but I imagine they must do them. Ours are financial via standing order. I think most of the cash goes into the distribution.

Thanks for the link to their webpage. I did not see any information about donation of food by individuals just corporations and cash donations. It looks like they get a lot of value from cash donations. I sometimes have extra food I would like to donate from my pantry. I will contact them and ask if they do that if not I will ask my local polgarmeister if the village does a food pantry or knows a local group .

I regulary donate to various charities
I spent most of the Covid lockdown, knitting (rather like a tricoteuse in front of the guilotine) mainly beanies for young children as well as baby blankets. My first lot together with durable food, toiletries and some warm sweaters went off to Ukraine in March 2022. Last week I sent another 20 childrens hats and 3 baby blankets which I hope will help keep a few small Ukranian bodies warm I've just finished the first beanie towards my next collection!
Anything like old leads, collars, harnesses, toys and medicaments no longer needed by my dogs, plus some bags of kibble and tiined food I donate to my local animal shelter. I'm starting to collect things together ( durable food, toiletries, warm clothes) for needy families in BAZ which I'll take along to the Dr Ambedkar Iskola in Miskolc. The only monetary donation I make is to a special school for children with Downs Syndrome.
Not much I know, but I suppose every little bit helps ...... and it keeps me out of mischief!

Yes, every little bit helps!
When we still commuted regualrly between Hungary and Germany by car it was always filled with second hand clothes from German family, friends and neighbours who knew about this. We gave hat stuff away here, better than giving it to the German Red Cross which sends much of it to recycling.
Now my family members in Germany give all that to Ukrainian refugees.

Just received this update -
In 2022, the Magyar Élélmiszerbank Egyesület helped the needy with HUF 10 billion worth of food. During the year, we increased our food rescue capacity by one and a half times in order to keep up with the ever-increasing needs of the needy due to inflation. Together with our volunteers and partners, we were able to prevent the destruction of 8.7 million kilos of food that was nearing its expiration date or with faulty packaging, so that it ended up on the tables of our compatriots with a difficult fate instead of landfills and incinerators. Last year, we were able to provide support to a total of 239,000 needy people, for which we owe thanks to all our helpers, supporters and sympathizers. The Food Bank was established by eight friends 18 years ago. Who would have thought that their collaboration would eventually expand into one of the most influential helping communities in our country? That's how it turned out. And we promise, we won't stop in 2023 either.
