Can't specifically answer your questions, but a quick search on Trip Adviser - 'Thermal lake at Heviz' shows some very mixed reviews in general. Can see nothing however relating to health scares.
I see that it's the world's second largest thermal lake, naturally heated - average temp 32C/90F.
From the comfort of my favourite chair, have just dipped a virtual toe
- guaranteed 100% safe! May do you some good, and without the expense or the crowds.

Hello all, it is a safe place. You get the option of a rubber ring that you put place under your armpits if the warm water sends you to sleep. We went with friends from the UK in the summer, 4 adults and 4 kids age 8-11, and we all enjoyed it. My parents have also been, aged 83 and 74, my father can't swim and still enjoyed it. it's around 2m deep in most places but there is a colossal hole to one side of the lake which goes down to 38m. They advise no more that 3 hours at a time in the water if I recall but that doesn't stop you going in later in the day. A good day out!

But Heviz is NOT recommended for people with certain types of heart conditions / high blood pressure or combinations thereof. My mother in law was not allowed to go to Heviz but could go to some other spas. So check with you doctor first. (Hungarian doctor because a UK doctor just won't know)

Re: Heves Thermal Public Baths

Hévíz water is special - even among the Hungariann spas (which are all good):

It's "aggressive" - you're not supposed to swim - might give your heart problems - just lie in the water.

And there's another risk afaik:

If you have skin cancer like melanomes you shouldn't go in because of the radioactivity!

Re: Heves Thermal Public Baths

Digger, thanks for the clarification - and the thanks!

Regarding accomodation in/near Hévíz:

I see several options:

There are many nice apartments in walking distance to the lake - good if you don't have/don't want to use a car.

On the "backside" of the lake is a campsite.

In the surrounding villages there are many rooms in B&Bs and apartments - relatively cheap because most guests nowadays want to stay in the town itself.

Good luck!

Digger
If you are a member of the Hungarian NHS and a doctor prescribes spa treatment then
1 the sessions are part funded by the NHS (50% I think)
2 the travel is paid
3 in some cases the accommodation gets support, I'm not sure how much, but I have a friend who had a spinal hernia and was sent to Hévíz after the operation and stayed in a hotel because it was too far to travel.
Worth thinking about if you are part of the Hungarian NHS

Hi Digger.

Sorry to read you are in the wars. I do hope you feel better very soon.

Have a { hug } from me.

Do you want me to alter the spelling of Heves to Héviz please?

Very happy to help.

No-one has altered any posts Digger. Any change or edit would show.

BE has been experiencing a few hitches though so maybe some of your post got lost when it posted.
