Default Growing Melons - 3rd time lucky?

Has anyone had success growing melons? The first year I had a couple of small water melons - think I must have planted too late. Last year I planted two varieties and the plants just seemed to disappear (eaten by birds or animals?). So before trying again this year, does anyone have any tips?
