I have 6500 square metres and was quoted 8000 Ft with me supplying equipment and fuel. I've never actually had it done and I've actually only once managed to cut the whole lot since I got the place in spring 2011. One of the reasons I've not paid to have it done is that there is so much work it would seem like slave labour to only pay 8000 Ft. I did get a Roma woman who was wanting to borrow money to do some strimming for pay instead of the loan. She came for about 8 hours and did about as much work as I could do in half an hour. Even that was no good as she was holding the strimmer too high off the ground and most of the grass just got knocked over rather than cut. I had to do it all again myself.

Last year I paid about 30,000 HUF to have a 3000sqm meadow cut by a tractor.
My house is 20km from Kecskemet.

If this was for one cut then that is way over the top IMO. Assuming the plot is not covered in trees, other obstructions or stones to damage cutters and is half way flat then a tractor should do that fairly quickly. I can cut 1.5ha / hour with my tractor and for 1/3 ha I would not expect to take more than 3/4 of an hour including mounting/dismounting the cutter. 12,000huf /hour is what I would expect to be the top price for a 'village' tractor. Last year I paid 4000huf to have 3000sqm wheat combined!

We find, in the rural villages, a typical Brits price is 8-10,000ft for 3-6,000sqm of level, unobstructed land - which we think is pretty fair considering German and Austrian owners tend to be paying nearly twice that amount.

Could be because we have been here 20 years and SWMBO has done her bit as a local councilor (8 years) and we are seen working our land that we are seen as local so get 'local rates'. This does not stop me feeling cross when others get ripped off.

....and that's the difference Peter. We don't pay to have our trees and vine pruned or sprayed and use one of our lads to do the grass as, like you, we are seen to be local now though it wasn't always like that. However, as one who has often taken issue with prices charged by trades and service providers in other areas, I now feel that as a non local owner, a few thousand forint isn't worth battling as it's better to keep the neighbours onside! Obviously a different matter though if the person is being blatantly ripped off.

An update on wages, a friend of ours has just taken a job in a village near the Balaton working in a poly tunnel, the wage is 500fts per hour plus travel expenses. Its a full time job so they will do it for 500fts, for part time work they want a bit more, about 700, but still want the travel paid as at that wage they can't afford the bus fare (can't afford as 2-3 hours work and then spend 1 hours money of bus fare does not make sense).

Get some Goats on it!

Or alternatively allow someone to cut it so they can keep the grass for hay, surely there are horse owners/yards over there?

I would go for sheep - Lambs in the spring to go in the freezer in the autumn, lawnmowers on legs, no winter feeding and easier to keep in than goats.

Milking - bin there, dun that. No thank you, the twice a day tie to the milking shed, including Sundays and Christmas day plus the problems of getting someone to milk if you want (have) to go away I found too much.
