Frozen Balaton

Having heard that the lake is frozen, but still not safe enough to skate on, can anyone send any pictures of the lake, and its suroundings, from anywhere? I'm sure everyone would be interested.

Re: Frozen Balaton

Friday evening the local authorities measured the depth of ice on the Balaton at Keszthely. They stated that it was 11cm and that with the current forecast the Keszthely strand ice rink is expected to open on Sunday morning. I have never seen this personally and agin if anyone is about with a camera, any photos would be appreciated.

If we can get out the village (which is looking doubtful with the amount of snow forecast) we'll take the children skating tomorrow and post the photos.

Apparently, there were several of them in swimming (or dunking) - there wasn't even a sauna in sight!

I saw some photos on the internet today of some guys who took their Hummers onto the ice and I believe 2 of them went through. One was reovered but the other was still there the day after (today?) :)

Re: Frozen Balaton

Reading about the cold stuff everywhere, does anyone else have any photos of anywhere else in Hungary? The daily newspapers have posted the following: Ice floes now cover 60-80% of the Danube on its Budapest stretch, and 90% further upstream. The Danube may freeze over in Budapest for the first time in 25 years, if night-time temperatures plunge to around –20C for a few more days. In 1987 a few people were able to cross the river on foot between Pest and Buda. Almost all of the Tisza river is covered by ice. Ice-breaking ships are on standby at various critical points along the Tisza as the river and its tributaries have frozen over on almost their entire stretch.

Looks great! But b***dy freezing!

Are all the road ok? Possibly bringing our stuff over in a 7.5 ton truck later this month.

Keep warm everybody

Judy

All the roads up here are clear now. They were teacherous at the weekend as the snow was falling however. Even at -20 driving is ok.
I have discovered 1st hand the dangers of not using winter tyres though; spinning my wife's car 3 times on Saturday morning.

Re: Frozen Balaton

I remember driving in Hungary in 1986, the last severe freeze. At that time we were putting alcohol in the windscreen wipers to stop the blades freezing to the windscreen. But that's another story.
Last night the National Transport Authority ordered a ban on shipping on the Hungarian stretch of the Danube from 10 p.m. (Thursday) in view of the icy conditions. Any ships on that section will be obliged to move to the next winter harbour.
Hungary’s biggest ice-breaker, the Széchenyi, left Győr on Thursday for Baja further south as the situation is the most dangerous there. The main fear now, is the ice blockades which could cause floods in the spring.
The Danube is completely frozen over in Austria, while restrictions on shipping have been announced for the Croat-Serb border and Slovakia.

There will be an Ice Carnival at the Keszthely waterfront, on Sunday 19th February, starting at 1pm. The usual stalls and ice skating races etc. If anyone does go, maybe you would be so kind as to take some photos for the forum. The photos from Rural H. were fabulous.
