Old fashioned iron.

Found this in one of the outbuildings at my mother-in-law's property. Am planning to restore it to pristine condition. Something to do during the cold winter months.
Any tips to avoid damaging it?

We once found something similar and just put it on a shelf, didn't touch it or paint it or ...
However we have no idea if it's worth anything - Jack is right, look at one of those markets or antique shops.
We went to several in Hévíz when a grand-nephew visited us who wanted some souvenir from WW1. We talked to several people who were all very friendly, even if they had nothing for him.

To be honest I'm not sure how it's supposed to work. Can anyone explain? I suspect there should be something inside. Not sure if hot coal or a container for hot water.

My father-in-law in law had alot of old fashioned gardening tools. I'm hoping to have a thorough search of the outbuildings to see what else I can find. I'll have a think about leaving it as it is.
There's an old fashioned wheelbarrow outside. Will upload photo tomorrow.

This guy is pretty awesome, and you can probably find lots of tips buried in this video.

This video is of him restoring an iron, but has tackled many other objects, tools, and machines, and the results are invariably quite incredible, and I suspect in many cases, that they are better by the time he's finished than they were when they were new.

Here's mine. We bought it at a car boot sale in England for 20p (the guy was selling everything for 20p each) and brought it with us.

There was quite a lot of stuff in the attic when I bought my house although someone from the village had helped himself to some of it previously, leaving behind lots of books from the 1970s amongst other things. There was a box tucked away in a corner that he had missed and inside was this old radio ....

There was also this sledge in the attic which I painted and varnished along with this old threshing machine hidden under straw in the barn ... I will use special wood oil on it later to protect it !

In use it would have been filled with burning coals or charcoal which provided the heat for ironing. In use it is unlikely to have been painted or stove blacked because paint would have burnt off and stove black - well you don't want that on your fresh washing. For restoration just brush down gently with a (soft) wire brush and either leave or paint with matt black. (We have a couple on display as bygone ornaments)

The sledge looks good, not very old and probably home made but someone has taken care to make it. I don't think the machine is a threshing machine but a seed cleaner. The handle is turned which operates the fan which blows through the grain blowing the chaff out but the seeds fall through, being heavier than the chaff. A threshing machine separates the grain from the stalk and husk by beating the whole. Threshing machines will also have a separator which operates by fan and sieves. Oh and I like the wooden pitch fork and the wooden buckets

Thank you Peter .... I guessed at threshing machine as I have seen them in use many times in Java so it's good to know what it really is ! I have three of the wooden pitchforks, again, found in the barn ! I also found two of these horse / cart shafts that are now up against the end wall of the summer kitchen !

Might use ours as a door stop but it would look nice on a shelf. I must start searching very cm of the outbuildings for any antique stuff. Am surprised you bought it in England but obviously in the day there must have been only one manufacturer or two who made a mint out of such irons! No doubt they were the 'must have' items of the day back then!

I was going to ask what Hobgoblins second photo was but Peter_in_Hungary has answered the question. The father-in-law did have quite alot of "antique" gardening equipment but late last year he went decided to get rid of alot of stuff. Not sure what prompted him but I think he knew he wouldn't be around much longer and didn't want to leave too much stuff he had "hoarded" instead of chucking out. There's still some very good gardening tools left for making light work of removing weeds, etc.

I think I'm going to ask the sister-in-law for a lift to the nearest market selling such stuff to enhance the attractiveness or is it nostalgia of a home.
