EON New regulation

Worth noting that as of the 11th of April, EON have brought in a new regulation (in most villages though not all) regards overhead cables. These will no longer be allowed and now must go underground thus making the cost of reconnection or upgrades slightly more expensive. A more important point though is that the cable will have to go underground to the house wall and so, worth considering the electrics before laying a new drive/path or wrap around patio area.

It's a great rule and will make most of the villages much tidier, but I very much doubt it will be implemented in our village!

Ignored more like!

You can't ignore it as otherwise EON won't do the work.

It's only from the pole to the house, not the main supply so won't make much of a difference aesthetically.

Who has to pay for this to be done then?

We upgraded end of last year and no mention was made of this coming in.

I don't quite understand. Does the power still go overhead between poles? Is it just that your own pole can no longer be fixed to your roof or is the cable coming down the side of the EON pole then underground under the pavement, front garden etc?

It will go from the pole underground to a box in the garden (think gas), from there it will run across the garden to the house, up the wall and into the meter. Will post a picture in a couple of weeks as have two at the paperwork stage at the moment. Many EON masters are not yet aware of the change and some details are still a bit sketchy at the moment but it is being enforced.

We have just had EON upgrade our cable /Elec a couple of weeks ago they just replaced overhead cable on pole. Hope they don't now come back and redo it.

They wouldn't come back after putting it overhead. The legislation came into effect on the 11th of April but does not apply to every property. Either your paperwork was submitted before the 11th of April or it doesn't apply to you.

Ours is being redone soon and we've been told that the electricity company pay for it to be done and for the meter :-)

Is it the meter you are having replaced? They do this every so many years and it is free of charge.

The whole shebang as we need to massively upgrade the electricity supply to the house up to modern standards (and to power all the kids' gadgets!!!). We're having a new meter on the outside wall of the house so it can be read while we're not there and the current supply which comes from the pole will go underground to it.

Hi Matt, I would double check on the "EON pay for it". EON will only upgrade to 32 amp free of charge, you pay per amp above the 32 but an EON registered electrician still has to request the upgrade and charges for the consumer unit, fitting the new box and connecting to the meter once EON has fitted it. With the new underground system, there is also an extra fee for the underground work. Wondering if you are having a rewire at the same time and the fitter has factored the cost into the job price.
If you have an inside meter then this would be moved to the outside anyhow as legally they must now be on the outside of the property. It used to be that from the meter onwards was the responsibility of the consumer though now it will be from the connector box in the garden - similar to the gas whereby EON are responsible up to the point of the gas box but the consumer is responsible beyond this point.
