Default Do you guys have to deal with this stuff every day?

So I took my wife's old car - a Volvo S40 - to the village garage,

The boys did a great job, we're talking new oil, new oil filter, new air filter, new fuel filter. Plus a couple of warning lights werre going dicky so they bought a second hand (ie cheap) replacement ABS thingy.

These days workshop hour has gone up a bit but they charged 60000 for the work then the parts on top - obvs every garage doubles the price of bits to turn a profit instead of a loss.

So my wife seems to think they are ripping us off.

Whereas I think they did a great job at a reasonable price.

If you got a bill then this should detail the number of hours worked. 10 000 fts is not unusual these days. (our local garden machinery service has a sign up saying "workshop hourly rate 7 500 fts + AFA"
So 6 hours doesn't seem unreasonable given they had to define the problem with the ABS, source and get the part then fit it then do the service work.

It depends on the number of hours worked, materials/parts, overheads (admin, paperwork plus mark-up[profit]) plus AFA. Any diagnostic work using special equipment would bump up the costs.
As Peter_in_Hungary said if for six hours work it is not unreasonable.
Often it is forgotten that there are additional costs, i.e. workshop use, admin, specialist equipment, tools, hydraulic ramp ...... .... a garage cannot run a service without having all the necessary tools, equipment and workshop! Then there's the add on fee for the accountant!

Whenever I'm quoted a price to do any work on my property or car I work out the hourly rate less materials, admin, overheads, etc.
Every day prices have gone up alot lately due to inflation and other factors every where.
