Competitions

I'm constantly being told stories so and so won money on the lottery, hence, why they could afford to buy a brand new car. Another friend won free solar power panels, another free 3 night stay at 5 star spa hotel. The 5 star spa hotel couple have had quite a few of these, some won by their daughter.

Is the wool being pulled over my eyes?

I, and my Hungarian wife, know nothing about these competitions. I suspect the solar power panel couple got a grant so pay nothing but there's always small print in those kind of grants .... you pay it all back if you sell your house. The 5 star spa couple probably were given vouchers in return for a good review. Maybe something has been list in translation.

I would not believe much when it comes to these sweepstakes prize winner claims. Call me skeptical. In my entire life (I am 62) I know only 2 people who ever won anthing of substence from a sweepstakes or lottery. I of my friends won a car and one won a cruise for 2 people.

I'm 63 ..... the highest I won on UK lottery was £2,000 . That came at a good time when I needed a bigger car knowing we were soon moving to a new house and getting a German Shepherd Dog.

I can think of three friends who genuinely won regularly in raffles, lotteries or competions. I've come to the conclusion that some people are more lucky that way. Of course it helps if you participate in whatever competition, lottery or raffle, which I don't so stand no chance of winning.

I think you need to participate a lot to have a chance of winning.

One should ask themself the question. How much money in my lifetime have I gambled away and what could I have afforded to purchase with the wasted money . I would venture to say those that are hardcore into gambling lose enough money during their life time to have bought a nice automobile or a wanted extravagant item that they can not presently afford. The odds are always in the house's favour. Certainly their are some people who are very lucky and have spent very little and won huge prizes. I am not one of them. That is why I reside here in Hungary.

Who said anything about gambling? The people I know usually won having bought raffle tickets for some charity or like Fen Tiger invested in Premium Bonds. The only time I won anything was a Microwave in a draw, after having bought a present for my DIL from a large store.

The only real gambler I've met was the mother of a friend who was paid weekly. Her first port of call on a Friday evening was the local casino where she gambled away her her week's wages. Gambling can be an addiction just like alcohol and very different from buying a raffle or lottery ticket or doing the football pools.
