Blast, I felt sure I would have had the answer on here by now.

Is it the local Okyamanduro we go to, that's not the correct name I know, but it 's the closest I can remember to it's name. (sounds like)

Hi

Can anyone give me some rough & ready guidance on the costs of running a modest car in Hungary? Say 1,000 cc Suzuki Swift - what are the Yearly Car Tax costs & insurance ? Is there a yearly equivalent of an MOT in Hungary?

General ball park cost advice would be a great help?

Regards

John

Well I bought my car here from a dealer a 1995 model, and it had 2 years MOT put on it for me, the insurance was about €70 not sure what cover I have but I did ask for the best, I got a green card, they would not do breakdown cover.

Car tax I'm not sure of as I don't recall seeing a bill for this yet. I am told there is a small road tax to pay it may be through the council office. I'll let you know when I get one,

Many thanks - all seems very reasonably priced.

Hi John

I registered my vauxhall astra here. It's a 1.7 diesel, year 2001. I only pay third party insurance which is around 30 000 Ft a year - this is before my no claims bonus. I had to send the document twice, I am hoping it will be taken into consideration now and my insurance will be even less.

The road tax does come through the council office, I have to pay 6000 Ft a year and you have the option to pay it in in 2 instalments even! The first deadline is 15th March and the second is 15 September.

Good luck with your car

Ria

Thanks Riahun,

Very useful. Sounds a lot cheaper than UK insurance & Road Tax.

Don't forget, when buying a car, there is a fee to transfer ownership. Most dealers include this in the purchase price, private sellers do not. Four years ago it cost 32 or 34,000ft but I believe it is now 50,000ft. This fee is paid by the buyer.

Would you believe? Received a payment slip this week, no letter, didn't know what it was, it had my car reg on, it was tax bill.

Paid my car tax bill yesterday, 5800ft, less than 18 quid for the year....Scandalous lol

The office you need to sell or register a vehicle is the Okmanyiroda. I think there's one in most big towns, not sure though.

I found a site from Google, in Hungarian though, Okmanyiroda Hu, hope it helps anyone.
