Budapest and the Blue (Disability) Badge
Went to Budapest yesterday, to my favourite restaurant on Hold Utca, whereby the traffic wardens came around litterally every ten minutes checking the parking spaces outside the two adjoining restaurants. To our (HU wife and family) surprise the wheel clamp came out of the warden's van rapid speed. No hesitation. My HU wife commented she could see no wrong in the parking. They were clearly public parking spaces. We were baffled why they did not just get a ticket. Anyway, having seeing three cars get clamped, whereby the owners then warned others not to park there, my wife went to look at the sign nearby. She said it read in such a way that any normal person would interpret it as 'ok to park there' - Its wording was about the un/loading of goods for the restaurants but did not clearly state or even mention this was exclusively for the restaurants. It in interpretted roughly as 'This area is used by restaurants for un/loading......' whereby it interpretted more like 'please allow restaurant owner to use this space.....'. Equivalent on a public transport bus whereby it states 'please give up this seat for an elderly/disabled person'. Anyway, I am just letting you 'be aware' of the Budapest parking tactics.
On a side note: I have a Disabilty (Blue Badge) whereby I asked the warden where I can park. He said I can park in car parks for free, on 'disabled parking spaces' and other places that are NOT un/loading spaces, government building reserved spaces, etc; which I found helpful. In the UK I can park on a double yellow line for up to 3 hours. Unfortunately, Budapest (and Hungary?) does not have double yellow lines; as far as I know.
