Just did a quick check on prices for the mazda 5 sport 2007 petrol, which I bought in the uk last month for £1,850 (with tax etc came to around £2,500).......on https://www.hasznaltauto.hu/ it is listed as 1,899,000 HUF (£5,135). Check the registration tax for it and it came to £2,000+........more than the car (mvp)!!!

Yes but the UK price plus Hungarian registration tax is still cheaper than the Hungarian market price. Which is why dealers and others import (old) cars from western Europe.......and the registration tax is high because the government does not want Hungary to be full of dirty (emission wise) old cars from western Europe

So basically unless you have a new car its not worth registering here.. its not worth buying 2nd hand..

How do new cars compare ? Is it possible to get pre registered, as in the UK?

A new uk car is stil subject to the registration tax.

Looking at new Hungarian cars vs uk, szuzuki swift is from 3,920,000 huf (£10,600) vs the uk selling the same car at £11,999.

Another thing to remember here is that many Hungarians who do buy a new Hungarian car usually do so using a pay-monthly option; as they do when buying a TV and other electrical goods.

You can get an idea about the registration tax for your car here
Regisztrációs adó kalkulátor 2018
When buying a used car here don't forget that Hungary doesn't have the consumer protection enjoyed by the UK. And if you haven't worked it out yet, used cars are (much) more expensive here than in the UK. IMO good second-hand estates with tow-bars will be like hens teeth !![/QUOTE]
Am trying to get the price but the last 2 bits are stumping me.

Do you mean the last 2 boxes to fill in on the tax calculator?

Első forgalombahelyezés időpontja: = date of first registration
Magyar regisztráció kezdeti időpontja: = Start date of Hungarian registration
Hengerűrtartalom: = engine capacity(choose from drop down menu)
Környezetvédelmi osztály besorolás: = Environmental classification (of the engine) (choose from a drop down menu)
Sámítás = calculate

For the notes (below any adverts) google does a reasonable job of translating these.

In the website click on the link at the Környezetvédelmi osztály besorolás line which will explain the classification. Google translate will help.
