The best magnolia you can choose for Hungary
It's got to be Magnolia liliiflora 'Nigra' (black lily magnolia).

Tongue-in-cheek of course! You go for whichever one you like. But we have got several varieties and this one is clearly the best, loves the heat, happy down to -25C (I think we've had colder), flowers early (late Feb/ March/ early April depending on weather) - and has deep purple flowers which stay looking good for 10 days or so. Bonus - we feed ours at Easter and it flowers a second smaller flush in the summer, in a very useful way, ie reduced number of flowers but spread over 6 weeks July/ Aug, perfect for summer hols.
Magnolias are meant to be happiest on acid soil but ours is pH neutral, clay on limestone with a fair bit of sand and gravel/ murva (they quarry it just up the road). And we are not there to water it June - mid-July and it stays perfectly happy in the heat/ dry.
