Yes, I have now also set up a bank account with no problems at all. My UK passport was the only requirement and the whole thing posed no problems. So it seems that putting money into the system is perfectly ok even if getting a Residents Card is not such an easy process!

Got the bank account when arranging to buy the house but not yet bought so had to give another address which was my UK address at the time. Had no difficulites. Biggest problem is getting someone to understand English. Luckily for us the agent went with us to help us do it. I'm with Raieffesen in Keszthely but they do do a monthly charge for the cards. Not sure if all thebanks here do that.

Forgot to say though that it was interesting cancelling my late husbands name off the accounts when he died and then adding my current partner to my own account. Just make sure you have passports with you.

Hmmm, they have an account with OPT in Marcali, the statements are sent to their Hungarian address but the account is registered to their UK address. I assume therefore that they will need an address card to have an account independent of their UK address

Opening an account in Hungary is wonderfully easy compared with UK rules. Passport will do. In UK utility bills needed which is a problem for people without a record here.

You can save money in Hungary by not getting hard copy statements sent & instead check them on line & print if required. OTP Tapolca has English speaker & I think many OTP branches do.

I have never tried to do on line banking to UK account from Hungary. I wonder, is it possible or do they reject instructions from foreign addresses just as iplayer blocks when outside UK ?

Am I right in thinking all property purchases are done in Forints? In Bulgaria they seem to use Euros, even though they are not in the Euro.

I have no problem with online banking from Hungary to UK. As long as you keep a UK address for the account it all seems to be fine.

Depends what the seller prefers, ours was done in Euros.

Yes, I think you will find that they quite often prefer Euros, I was asked if I could use Euros in preference to forints, it just makes it a little more confusing if you are using GBP to get the price right.

They accept it no problem, I do it, although as little as possible for security reasons only.
