Address Cards

In another thread, mention is made of "Address Cards". It seems they act as a substitute for a Residents Card and can be used on the many occasions when a Residents Card is requested, such as buying a SIM card or even buying a car.

For those of us not yet resident in Hungary & therefore not entitled to a Residents Card, this Address Card sounds very useful indeed.

I have been told by one party that they were given one when they registered at their local council office to pay the local rates, & by another that the card comes from somewhere else. I must say I wasn't given a card by my village council but that doesn't mean much either way.

I wonder whether everyone is talking of the same card?

I would be fascinated to know what the Hungarian name is for this card? I could then ask for one either at the village council office or elsewhere. For people who are not yet resident it could be very very useful.

Re: Address Cards

Hi John,
You get 2 cards one is like a register id and the other one is the house address card.
Yes the benefits are you can get HP, Sim cards, cars ect also your council tax will be reduced once you become a resident you just take in your cards to your local council office and they will photo copy and your rates will be reduced.
Also you need these cards if you want to be in the National Health System.

Hope this helps

Klarika

LAKCÍMET IGAZOLÓ HATÓSÁGI IGAZOLVÁNY and the other one is

REGICIOSCIO IGAZOLÁS

Re: Address Cards

Hi John, it's the address card you are looking for and not the resident's card - two completely different things. The office in Tapolca will be able to sort it out for you, just take proof of house purchase and passport with you.

Re: Address Cards

You usually get the address card when you purchase your property at the same time as being issued your tax number John but you can apply for it at a later date.

I think the residents card John is referring to is the card you obtain when you apply for residency and you wouldn't be given that without apply for it.

Crossed wires I think. :)

Re: Address Cards

Dear all

I recently applied for my residency and address cards and thought viewers might like to know what happened.

I went with my wife (Hungarian speaker) to the Office of Immigration and Nationality 1117. Budapest, XI. district, Budafoki út 60. We took the first door on the left up the short flight of stairs, then turned left again into the main waiting room. We queued at the information window to ask what the process was. A helpful lady there spoke fluent English and told us we required the following:

1. Application form (which she gave us)
2. Money stamp for 1000 HUF available from any post office (there is one in the shopping centre opposite the office)
3. Photocopy of bank statement (nothing said about what should be on it; mine was a month old and had £1000 in it) - there is a photocopy machine in the lobby if you need it.
4. Photocopy of marriage certificate (my wife is a Hungarian national and we were married in Hungary)
5. Statement signed by property owner that I have the right to stay in my flat. In our case my wife (who owns our flat) simply wrote out something official sounding and signed it.
6. Passport
7. EHIC card from the UK. The application form also has an option which says 'I will cover the costs of healthcare myself' so I'm not sure if you actually need an EHIC card or proof of private insurance.

After we got all this together we went back to the information office window and were given a ticket. After about 30 mins wait we went through to the back office where a lady (who I don't think spoke English, but they must have some fluent English speakers there because I heard them talking to other clients) checked our paperwork. I then had to sign a declaration stating when I last crossed the border into Hungary; which in my case was two weeks ago, I guess if you put more than 3 months ago you would have problems.

I was also given the option of a biometric card which cost 10,000 ft and took 3 months to process but the lady couldn't come up with any good reasons for having it so we didn't bother. She also said that the card doesn't have a picture so you still need to carry photo ID with you - I usually carry my GB driving licence card.

We were issued with the registration card (Regiszracios Igazolas) on the spot, and were told the address card will be posted in ten days or so.

I'd allow at least 2 hours for the whole process and take a Hungarian speaker with you if your language is not up to scratch.

Hope this helps,
Austin

Hi John,

The name of the card what you are looking for is LAKCÍMKÁRTYA or LAKCÍMET IGAZOLÓ HATÓSÁGI IGAZOLVÁNY, but first of all you have to apply the Hungarian residence permit.
The process is easy for EU citizens.

Hi HA and welcome to the forums. Perhaps you could post an introductory post so we get to know you a bit better?

Just to clarify that you can obtain an address card without having residency. Also, if you do require residency, you can apply for both simultaneously - the Residence card is issued on the spot whilst the address card takes around two weeks to arrive.

ADDRESS CARD/RESIDENCY CARD

Hi to all you lucky folk enjoying the good weather whilst we are plodding amongst severe floods here in the north east of England! Could anyone enlighten me as to whether or not there is a difference between an Address Card and a Resident's Card. If there is, then what are the differences and how are they used. Many thanks.

Re: ADDRESS CARD/RESIDENCY CARD

As I understand it, everyone in Hungary has an Address card but only foreigners staying in Hungary get a Residents card. In practice you go to an office, show some documents and a hand over a stamp that provides payment and (all being well) they print out the Residents one there and then. The address card arrives by post about 2 weeks later. Since I got my address card I show that to anyone who wants my address. I carry both but I think the address card is the important one.

Re: ADDRESS CARD/RESIDENCY CARD

Thank you Fibosa. Any idea what kind of office and where do we get the stamp? It's very baffling and don't even know whether we need one as we don't live in Hungary we just own a house there. The mayor's office has never sent us anything to-date. Cheers for your advice.

Re: ADDRESS CARD/RESIDENCY CARD

I wanted an address card so I could get an internet account and buy a Hungarian registered car but if you don't need it for anything specific like that I would not bother. You probably don't stay here for long enough each year to claim resident status anyway but I've no doubt there is another route for getting just the address card. You could ask the mayor about that. You get the stamp at the post office. All this has been discussed in detail on an earlier thread.

The stamp is from the post office, and you need to go to your local main town's immigration office. There is a string of posts here that I am sure Rural Hungary can point you to. It is a bit of a form filling exercise, a visit to the local office and then all things being equal that is that. :)

That didn't happen in my case, are you sure this statement is correct?
