I put my two dogs in kennels at mapusa on the 8th of feb for two weeks (I have used these kennels in the past)they were there for two weeks and when I went to pick them up the owner said said they had a few ticks, actually they were infested, i removed over 60 ticks from our rottie Heidi over the the following few days and to cut a long story short she died of acute kidney and liver failure on easter sunday brought on by the tick fever.
just think people should be aware of the seriousness of it and take care where you kennel your pets!!

Sorry to hear your sad story.

Tick fever is a nasty thing and supposedly only pedigree dogs are affected by it. I`ve got two local dogs and they always have tick collars on cos I don`t want them to suffer......whatever the cost maybe.
My maid has lost 2 dogs to tick fever but still will not spend out 500rp to protect 1 of her new dogs who is suddenly riddled with them.

Just heard that around 5 dogs have died in our village in Goa, including one of the two we feed. Poison is assumed but I suppose it could be tick fever.

Yes i would agree Andy. Ticks are rife at the moment and in pedigree dogs especially it can take hold and kill in a very short period. Locals are quick to blame poison when their animal dies because they are afraid of the veterinary costs when the animal becomes sick.


Things to look out for in case of Tick fever are bleeding from the nostril or mouth or blood in the stools and broken blood vessels in the eyes.

I`d rather spend 2000rp a year for tick collars every 6 months for my 2 dogs and not have the worry of ticks......or tick fever.....

a tip in case your dogs do get ticks......twist them anti clockwise and they come out cleanly and don`t leave the head to cause infection.

Tick collars are better than nothing but front line every month which you put directly on to there skin between the shoulder blades is the only way to make the ticks drop off and keep away for one month or more.
Can you not get it over there?
I never new that ticks could infest a dog then a few weeks later they die of tick fever, thats new to me.

It appears that only pedigree are so vulnerable. I find a tick collar works well and no ticks on my dogs. Frontline is available here but expensive and not as effective as the collars.

Common knowledge to those that live there, or have done in the past.

Dogs die from many things in Goa, Parvo (yes its still rife, and if Eastern Europeans keep smuggling their dogs into the UK, it will be here again soon. Parvo hotspots currently coincide with 'Pean concentrations), poisoning by jealous neighbours, traffic accidents, etc, but..............

BY FAR THE BIGGEST KILLER IS.............

tick fever in domestic pet dogs,

and tick collars work, and they are affordable to the masses, and to foreigners actually "living" in India.
Of course Western vetinary solutions are superior, so are western medicines for people, but the vast majority of Indians (and Goans) do not see them as affordable

You are lucky the collars work its a much cheaper option, I thought maybe in India frontline would be cheaper.
Its also tick season where I live and unlike Goa the tick collars cannot keep the ticks at bay, frontline or spot on is the only way to keep your dogs tick free.
I will bring a few tick collars over to put on the beach dogs next time I;m in Goa.
What about heart worm? thats a huge killer here, most dogs un treated or injected every year or tablet every month will have not a long life, the treatment on a dog is very harsh too if they are infected lots die from the treatment.
