NEWTONS SUPERMARKET

We were here when he opened his first supermarket in Calangute opposite the Kamat and that is when he started to shaft every tourist that came into his shop. There was a promotion for a new vodka that would sell at 60rps which in those days had the price printed on the bottle - he scraped it off and charged 80 - until we challenged him about it.
We do not shop there but today I wanted to buy some Horlicks - can't find it anywhere so had to go in there - and what did I find - Horlicks price wiped out and another one written over it.
Weetabix - 100 per cent free - that bit blocked out in Newtons - and it was 250 rps - bought the same in AJ's for 195 rps.
Bought a tub of Catch salt in Bardez Bazaar and it was 9rps and in Newtons they had rubbed off the price and there was a sticker for 10 rps.
It just gets up my nose how he does every little trick to rip people off - somebody has to pay for his new shop in Candolim - but it will not be us.
We were looking for a plastic box and when we picked one up it said on it that it was free with noodles but it had a price sticker on it for 20rps - we asked where were did we get the noodles from that it would be free but we got the shake of the head.
The moral of the story is watch NEWTONS - he really is a robber.

Re: NEWTONS SUPERMARKET

It makes you feel like pinching something from his shop!!!.
Our supermarkets in South goa are up to the same tricks.
Stickers over the prices.
I like the menus with the stickers on, i sit and pick them off:thumbsup:,
give it a try.

Newtons new or old has always been a rip off, no locals use it and hopefully tourists will come to their senses and see how much dearer things are, really suprised no one has contacted the trading commission and had him done for not charging the correct MRP, and imported goods are a joke 180rps for a Mars Drink.
Viegas in Arpora and AJs in Mapusa are doing 24 weetabix + 12 free for 250rps yet in Newtons they will charge you for the 12 extra, Rowandas is another shop I avoid he sells the free gifts aswell.
But what i detest the most in Newtons is the vast amount of staff following you around like a common criminal and to add to that smelling badly of BO yuck!!!!!!!!

Apart from overpricing, I cannot stand being followed around, and then when you come to pay only two check outs working and about 20 people standing watching you. Then change being given in Sweets. Sorry only go in if desperate, won't accept sweets. Don't mind paying marked prices but not his inflated ones.

Re: NEWTONS SUPERMARKET

What a consumer friendly Supermarket this is. They want you bags before you go in but not be responsible for them. :curse:
Posters on the walls to say no refunds under any circumstances, then keep your receipt if you have a complaint. Breakages are definitely your fault and you pay if anything rolls of the shelf.
They then they follow you around like like your the Artful Dogger, and I'm retired now.
The tills do not show, since the first week last year, what you are paying for, and since Charter Flights, they have filled the tills with sweets to give as change. :sneaky:
Usually we now go to Farmers Choice at Porvrim at least he has some offers deals and the prices are lower than most in Candelim or Calengute:thumbsup:
Newtons could have been an excellent shop but from now if I use it I'll ask the guy thats stalking me for every item we want to be placed in the basket then if my other half has taken any sweets pay them back in.
Another Goan con, and they say so sincerely "not by us sir these cons come from the foreigners from out of state"

Newtons - I would rather give 5 rups extra to a tiny local shop.
But we do go in there, especially last week when very humid, and have a ten minute walkaround to cool down, of coursefollowed by assistants. Then came out buying zilch, but a lot cooler.

Have offered to pay them in my sweets I have collected, but they refused.:rofl: pratts.

Following all the complaints on here about the wonderful High-pr-market at Candilonium, I took the trouble to pop down today and interview the owner, so he could give his side.......

J5 Good morning Mr Mugabe
MM Hello strange metal foreigner

J5 You have been getting a lot of bad press recently
MM Do I look like I give a sh*t?

J5 Why do you bump up so many of your prices?
MM To make more money, stupid

J5 Customers don't like sweets instead of change
MM Are you telling me all these fat foreigners don't like sweets?

J5 Why do you change marked prices by a few rupees?
MM So I don't have to give out so many sweets

J5 Why do your staff smell so bad?
MM So you don't trip over them when they are sat on the floor changing marked prices

J5 And why do they follow customers? Do they think they are all thieves?
MM Yes

J5 Ajays in Mapusa appears to have very satisfied customers, are you not worried?
MM No, I just want your money

J5 Thank you Mr Mugabe, is there anything you would like to add?
MM Yes. If you are not spending any money, get out of my shop

 Johnny Five rupees more, innit?

Re: NEWTONS SUPERMARKET

There is a Consumer Rights organisation called GOACAN which may or may not represent foreigners regarding the above mentioned grievances.

We have simply withdrawn our custom unless there is something particular not to be found elsewhere.

MRP means Maximum Retail Price and should not be overwritten with notional values. Locals are talken aback whenever asked to pay the MRP since it is normal practice for them to pay less than MRP!

IMHO, Newton's trading practices amount to extortion and are highly corrupt. He has no right to interfere with the manufacturers guide price, weights and measures, withhold discounts or to give change in sweets if not accepting the same back as currency.

Boycott him whenever possible.

http://news.webindia123.com/news/Art...0/1031588.html

http://goacan.blogspot.com/

I told Lawande that he was acting illegally a few years ago but he essentially told me to f off and shop at the market which is what we do, as well as at Farmer's Choice, Porvorim.

We buy essentials like beer, spirits and water at wholesale outlets and get money back on the bottles.

Good for you boycotting him and Newtons. We only buy in the Hira Shop, and the new little shop next to the Tiger Trail at the side of Newtons, and the lady gives me 2rups off. bless her!.

We got the same reply from Newton when we told him about the vodka so went to Panjim to find the consumer place (there was supposed to be one then) but could not find it.
We do not go in now except for when my friend told me he had the wrong price on the Romanoff when he first opened the new shop and we were in there like a flash - made my week.
We shop at Bardez Bazaar opposite the boys school in Calangute or AJays in Mapusa and both shops discount their goods.

Did you note somewhere in the weekends papers that liquor is to have MRP price printed on it very shortly ?
Apparently what we think is cheap at Rs. 130 should be Rs.75 !!
Retailers are crying, especially the one near the Spitfire where all the coaches pull up for Feni at Rs250,which should be Rs.30 !
Taxi drivers get Rs.50 commission for taking the mainly domestic tourists there .
'Oh what fun we had,but did it really seem that bad ?'

Does it? I can't find it - tho' I thought that was the MRP (I pay Rs. 420 a case = Rs. 35 - delivered!).
afaik the going rate for fenny (coconu / cashew) should be around Rs. 15 / 25

my latest receipe:
R/
a piece of ginger as big as your hand
1/2 cup white jaggery
1/2 cup sugar (i.e. put some jaggery in a cup (US) and fill up with sugar)
1/4 litre todi (fresh from the market &c.)
1 or 2 fresh limes

scrape the skin from the ginger then grate / chop very fine
put the ginger, sugar+ jaggery, halved limes in a pan with about a litre of water and bring to the boil
leave to cool
Put in a 5 litre Bisleri water bottle, add about an inch of the todi (drink the rest for your health) and make up to about 4 1/2 litres with boiled / bought water.
Leave the top open a tiny crack and leave for about three days (if you transfer the limes to the 5 litre bottle, remove after 1 day).
Put a teaspoon of sugar in each of three 1 1/2 litre PET (plastic) water bottles.
Strain the mixtre through a fine sieve and fill each bottle to 3" from the top and screw on cap.
Leave for a day or so (maybe less) until the bottles are 'hard'.
Put immediately into fridge.
Leave for a few days and then drink - about 1/2" in a large glass of Kingfisher makes a nice drink!!

This is the end result of a number of trials - I commend it to you (Caveat Emptor etc. etc.)

Yes we pay 35 rups and have it delivered. But new stock in the shacks and some resturants have 39 rups stamped on it, of course, they still want 70 for Kingfisher.

Saw the article about putting the price on the bottles - as it used to be.

Must go to the shop near the Spitfire to take a photo of the sign which says do not pee here - they have coach loads of domestic tourists go there and they always peed up the wall whilst they were waiting and the stink was awful when we went to the gym near there on a Monday after a weekend of domestic tourists.

Not been to Bardez Bazar for a couple of days but the owner who used to live in US told us he was going to get the veg outside instead of just bits inside - will go down tomorrow and have a look.

a-f-d my latest receipe (sic): what does this mean - what are we making?

Sounds a bit like ginger beer but you did not say - it could be a recipe for disaster ;).

When we put in a 5ltr Bisleri bottle is this with or without the water?

yes put it all in the 5l bottle (it gets strained later).
It's a bit stronger than ordinary Ginger Beer - try it!

It turned out that somebody has smashed/broken something in the store and would not pay. He was ranting that it was his policy they HAD TO PAY:curse:

Had a real paddy in Newtons yesterday, the price on suntan lotion was 256 rups and they tried to charge me 385 rups. I called for the manager, he argued as well - so I told them in a few loud voice that they had a terrible reputition on a website for overcharging people and give sweets for change. Pardon he said - so I said it again. Guess who had the suntan lotion for 256:rofl::rofl: did enjoy tell them.

Good! Also, bear in mind that no shopkeeper is legally allowed to tamper with the MRP PRICE given onm the product - if the same has been tampered, u can go the MRTPC office or consumer court - there have been many cases in Mumbai of the licence of the shopkeeper being cancelled if the complaint is genuine.

Newtons do it all the time. What good would it do, we are in enough trouble with our property issues without drawing more attention to ourselves going to court. But we can vote with our feet. Good for you Noni hope they do not try it on your 'noffi.

Its like Old Man says would'nt do us any good complaining to the consumer people, all we can do is not buy the stuff, Newtons is solely for the tourists and that's what he makes his money from, no locals shop there and us long termers now know we can cheaper elsewhere.i wont buy anything with a shops label slapped over the top of the MRP, there's a little supermarket in Calangute by Bubbles that puts his labels beside the MRP and he sometimes lowers the price of stuff.
But i have to say even as a tourists i would'nt be paying for stuff here that costs the same at home but hey its not my holiday money im spending.
And dont we just love going to Mapusa and smelling the roses whilst shops for our cheapie stuff !!!!!!!
