Long term villa rental needed
 

Hi All

My family and I are looking to rent a 4 bedroom villa in Arpora, Candolim, Saligao, Guirim or any surrounding areas. We are looking to rent from the end of August for about 9 months. We're a family of five with three kids aged between two and ten. If you know of anything suitable and available please let me know!

Whats your budget? I will be back there July 1st and will ask around. Do you want modern or period? Fully furnished/part/or empty.
Come on Julia, lets have a wish list then people can try to tick as many boxes as possible for you.

I don't really want to state my budget as paranoid about being ripped off, but let's say that we will pay the market rate for rental of such a villa!

I'm not too fussed about the age of the property, as long as it's clean, habitable and not falling to bits and does not have any pest infestations!

We're shipping all our own furniture from the UK, so we will have mostly everything we need - we would prefer unfurnished as there is less chance of our kids breaking anything!! But if there is a nice one available and it just happens to be furnished, then we will consider.

Just enough space for a family of five really, decent size kitchen, - and 4 bedrooms as kids all need their own rooms in order to sleep propperly!

either. Who is going to rip them off on this forum?
Equally, who is going to ask around about houses for them when they know the first question will be "how much do they want to spend?"
Houses that fit this description are available from under Rs20k to over Rs 80k per month. Without financial guidance enquiries are pointless I'm afraid.........

Can I re-emphasise that a forum is completely anonymous.
The price you wish to pay for a house is not "personal details"
All of us on here are prepared to help others, its one of the reasons we hang out here I guess........
But checking out houses for a member requires getting off one's *rs* and making an effort............fruitless without enough info.
I asked for a wish list because I thought it might bring up little things like AC? for the kids to sleep as it will be bl**dy hot in Sept/Oct? Like proximity to schools or shops, or the beach........not "space to park a jeep".
Contessa was confused thinking you were only staying for 9 months, rather than using the time to have your own house built to live in, making the most of your PIO status.
It was kind of Noni to say such nice things about me, but in this instance I would prefer to withdraw quietly, please................

LOL! Yes it would be if we were only staying in Goa for nine months! We are buying a plot and having our own villa constructed, and while the construction is taking place we will need to rent :)

We are moving to Goa permantly!

NO! I didn't mean that anyone on this forum would rip me off! Give it a rest! I just meant that I would rather find out first what asking price people want to rent their villas for and then negotiate with them. I don't like to make the first move with regards to price. If I state a specific budget then villa owners will want to charge 'exactly that'! Come on you all know how the Goans are with price negotiations! I would rather hear what people want first and then knock off a few rupes!

I agree with you that there is VAST price variation though! As a guide I'm looking more towards the lower end of the price spectrum you mentioned as this renting is only temporary while we have our own villa constructed. We can 'slum it' a bit for nine months, but not a total slum though!

Villa in one piece, not derilect or infested with rats, running water, those sorts of things!

Hi Johnny Five!

I only asked if anyone knew of any villas available fitting the description (perhaps some forum members are owners themselves and wish to let!) I will negotiate the price with the owner directly. I don't expect anyone on this forum to make a special effort for me and try specifically to find me a place! Crikey, I'm a total stranger to you all. If anyone did go to those lengths then I would give them a big hug, but I'm really not expecting it :)


AC I don't mind not having. This is not essential to me or my kids - we like the heat :) and if you have AC indoors then going out feels twice as hot! And also I don't want my hubby shouting "Shut the bloody door!" to me when I go out for a fag, as he does here in England! Imagine that - "you're letting the COLD out!" LOL :)

Shops I don't care about so much as we can drive to them if need be!

BTW what's wrong with "Space to park a Jeep"! I don't really want to park on a public road due to the crime / vandalism problems and would rather have private parking. If available. Not essential but desirable :)

Well said MWG.
Most of my friends with children have taken them out of this school and they now go by bus to a very good one down near Vasco.
The reasons seemed not to be academic standards or anything, just steadily climbing fees and rapidly shrinking school year. As far as I can remember the school was shut throughout the monsoon, close to 5 months I think, but not totally sure? The schools arguement being that foreigners leave Goa for that period. Some might, but many do not!
They all seem very happy with the new school and even with the transport costs it still works out less expensive.
I guess its so close to the tourist rip-off zones that the school has started to copy their ways?

Something worth noting is that when my Swiss friend was applying for visas in Europe, she was told that her daughter would not get a student visa for the Saligao school because it was not recognised by the authorities, so she came on a tourist one (she is 10). When she applied and was accepted at the Vasco school, they required a student visa, so she had to travel to Sri Lanka to get the tourist one cancelled and a student one granted. Surely this "recognition" thing must say something?

I have been to visit the school and the head mistress seemed very nice, and she interviewed my son for a place. We saw a few schools while we were out there in April, some of them seemed too strict - the ones run by priests and nuns! Mater Dei seemed a bit more, well English! And there is a good mix of kids that go there also - locals and foreigners - so I thought my kids would fit in better there!

If anyone has any experience of this school, good or bad, then I would definitely be interested to know!
