Kitchens

Has anyone heard of La Cucina Impreza who install modular kitchens. If so, are they any good and reputable ? We have had a quote from them to install kitchen units along two walls excluding white goods and wondered how good they are. They are charging approx £2000 for supply and installation.
Also can anyone recommend a good electrician please?

Hi Mzee
welcome to the forum,:thumbup: I had my kitchen built by a local muslim builder (good craftsmen) on site. I designed it with him he has all types of kitchen designs and will do whatever you want.
I had an L Shape kitchen units built, I had four wall units all my under counter doors and shelves plus a triple drawer unit fitted. the total cost last year was just over £600.00.
I think you are being charged quite a lot compared to UK prices.
If you need his number PM me as I don't know whether I can advertise his number or not.
Good Luck:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Re: Kitchens

Patchsidhu, I reckon the price is very reasonable compared to UK prices. In terms of Goa prices, I reckon £2k is not horrendous as long as the oven & hob are included. Someone I know paid a similar amount for a very nice 'U' shaped kitchen to be installed a year & a half ago, complete with 'granite' type work surfaces.

Regards

Hemingway.

It depends when he purchased his kitchen - ours was £800 handmade Burma Teak, made to measure 7 wall cupboards, under the granite, Burma Teak cupboards - recommened to friends - cost now up to £2500 and rising fast.

Thanks, I must say everyone has been really helpful on this forum. He has quoted to include the gas hob but not oven. The computer generated images look very impressive. I am getting two other quotes and will post details as soon as I know as it may be of help to others. I gather prices are rising pretty fast for services in Goa !!

prices are rising, for simple reason.they are making most of it while the foreigners are still there, everybody in goa is aware of this, because, is not the mid-class indian person who`s gonna pay 2000 quids for a kitchen,he has to work at least 3years for it.

The Carpenters have got greedy, but last year were laying people off - imagine now that the property sales are down how their businesses are going to suffer. Perhaps you might get a better deal now.
I have to say the quality of our handmade furniture is superb, and the price was right. At that time we did not know the current situation regarding purchasing, now it would be cheap and cheerful.

Hi Hemingway

I had my kitchen done Nov/Dec 08 and the guy was very reasonable, the four burner gas hob I bought from Vasco for £40.00 and the kichen was below the £600.00 mark and done to a very high spec.
I already had L shaped Granite work surface built in by the developer and had the units built under the counter and wall units above. I am based in Colva South Goa and the Carpenter is a local man from Colva.

Hi Camelo - I really agree with you BUT I am putting my Goan head on, as we will be leaving the country in a few weeks. Our prices were over 6 years ago, when work was short and before their greedy little eyes started to see "idiots of FN's head" and rupees before their eyes.

We had a 3 seater sofa, 2 chairs, coffee table, dining table, 4 chairs, 2 single beds 1 king size bed and vast wardrobes/over cupboards plus the odd mirror etc for £3.5k in March 2007, built in teak by a local builder. When we called him back this April to do 2 small corner tables to match the coffee table plus a 3 draw unit in the kitchen and a lid for the electricity meter he wanted £1.5k. Make up your own minds but he didn't get the job. In the current circumstances we won't be enhancing our property any more.

Hi Patchsidhu
We got caught out last Xmas on the Goans cashing in,so we got the basics then we did the same as you contacted a company in Rajastan and had the lot shipped at a quarter of the cost that the Goans were charging, beautiful furniture,a lot more style. We are delighted. We would never shop in Goa now for furniture. They have lost out big time because I am passing this information on to my friends my little man in Rajastan in coining it in and Im really glad. When will these greedy Goans learn we will only be taken once:eek::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Hi Goancrazy
Too right!!! I was looking everywhere in Goa and the price of furniture was very high.
I would recommend anyone to shop around before commiting yourself, as there is a big difference in prices.

yes noni, well said.same to me ,when ,i bought my stuff 8 years ago, they were cheaper, but quality wise was nil,at that time had no choices, because wasn´t many furniture shops around who sells good quality furniture,if i remember, they were only 2,well known in north goa ,but now,i´m happy for people who seems to know how to shop around.it was late for me ,when i discovered rajasthan.well done guys.pass it around.

White goods - Menzies's in Panjim. Two shops in Calengute - have quotes from all and play one off against the other. Another way we got good prices was to buy white goods with friends, so the order was so much bigger, and so were the discounts.

Goa Crazy, the place in Margao is called Telalekaur, they've got 2 shops - one on the outskirts & one in the town centre - competitive on price & do what they say they will, when they say they will.

From memory, I think our friends paid somewhere in the region of £350 to £400 per room fitted - they just did two upstairs bedrooms. For downstairs they paid about £350 I think for mozzie screens over front & back doors + some windows so they could leave them open & get a nice breeze blowing through. . . . . . . . . . .

Our mossie screens are fitted to all windows so that the windows can remain open the whole time we are in Goa letting a breeze blow through. (Of course we have fancy security screens as well)

We used Acme AC in Panjim, a very easy to deal with owner, strangely called Shannan (or at least, that's how you pronounce it). He's a world travelled very Anglo Indian, and is available to come to site for to assess your needs prior to purchase any in the event of any snagging problems in the fit. Last mobile number I had for him in Goa was 9823174922

It was no more than a total of 40,000R/- fully fitted, 3 free services and guarantees, for 2 x 1Ton LG units, including 2 wide range invertors. Very little discount for cash, so chose to pay by cheque, and he was very trusting on the payment, and reliable as things go. That was around about February 2006.

He's in a small showroom at the crossroad junction not far from Don Bosco,(quite tricky to find) but is in the phone book and in Homes & Estates magazine, though that's not why we used him. He was recommended by fellow expats.

We have meant to fit another 2 x 1.5 Ton units, but have held back, as on many other expenditures in Goa - same as most FN's; why potentially waste more money if they can't even reassure you that you own your place?

Amongst other things being held back on are a big screen plasma TV, 3 other TV's, some partial rewiring (3 phase), 11 replacement windows in teak (24 already done in 2005), 3 replacement doors, more furniture and a host of incidentals and small labouring jobs.

Their loss!;)

AFAIK, you can get some BBC content on TataSky dish packages, not only sport, but news and some regular programmes. Also, we enjoy Bollywood movies. BBC World News and CNN keep you in touch a bit, even if they are annoyingly repetitive.

Apart from that, there's always DVD's, and the 5 movies on one DVD are great value if you haggle enough.:);) They were going at 90R/- at Mapusa market during monsoon (less foreigners around, so I suppose that's near what the locals pay), but they'll try 250/200R/- during season.

Anyway, as I said, not getting a plasma, or much else more because of the property situation; only more stuff to have to try and sell, or pass on when making an exit.

A bit of good news for MFI employees - there's been a management buyout thereby safeguarding 2,000+ jobs - according to BBC business news at about 5:20am this morning!

No wonder the locals resent us - they could get a basic 1 1/2 room house built for around Rs. 2 lakh , with electricity, drainage and water -- which is better than a lot of people have now!
