First Week Back in Goa

Hi Everyone

Well we have now been back a whole week and I thought it was time to report in :)
Flight with Air India was made reasonable only by the fact that we had lots of spare seats and could lie down. They rushed us through at Heathrow for boarding and then we sat for one and half hours in the departure lounge :frown: No reason given for the delay, they did'nt seem to give a toss!! Would not allow me to have wine and noffi on the plane as they said I was'nt allowed to mix my drinks:ohmy: Plane was old, seats didnt feel as though they were bolted in properly and there was no in flight entertainment:mad: (Well there was but nobodys headphones worked!!). Well it was extremely cheap so I suppose you only get what you pay for. One major concern was the complete lack of care about people using their mobiles....quite scarey really!! Flight to Goa from Mumbai with Indian Airlines was much nicer, new plane and even a lovely meal....mobiles still used in abundance though!
Our house had suffered some monsoon damage and the rear terrace had collapsed into the backside field. Repairs are underway although it does feel a little like staying in a building site!! Probably about four more days work and we should then be back to normal.
Had my first real attack of dheli belly, on Monday, power had been off all day on Sunday so I think the food we ate had not been preserved properly. Still not completely 100% but am on the mend:D
Everywhere looks beautiful, green and lush although not for much longer I think, as we have had no rain for three days and the sun is hotting up every day.
Lots of talk around about the FN situation although it appears that peoples main concern is the visa situation rather that the D of E investigations. First question you are asked is "what visa did you get". People are getting very concerned about renewing current visas and consequently there are a lot of people selling up. It is also surprising that people are commanding quite high prices and getting them, most sales from out of state Indians. It does make you wonder if the bubble will burst soon.
The current Homes and Estates magazine fully acknowledge the problems with the situation at the moment. They do say though, that the government will resolve the problems very soon and things will hopefully be back to normal. (how the hell they think that, I have no idea). But as many people have said to us, even if the registry reopens it will not solve the visa problems from the UK.
I am sat at my dining table at the moment watching the water buffalo in the field about 15 feet away. He is lolling in a big puddle swishing his tail to get the birds off his back !!! Lovely sight, just what Goa is all about.
Have had lots of lovely food and lots of noffi and honeybee. Took us a good few days to get over the journey this time, must be getting old:rofl:
'Borrowed' a friends car, never driven here before, we have had some fun the last few days and a lot of hary moments!!
Have I missed much? Dial up here is so bloody slow, I havent had time to get on....when in Goa, waiting 5minutes for each page to load seems a bit of a wasted exercise....if you know what I mean?
take care all

Hi Indiapurple,

Good to hear from you and thanks for taking the time to let us know how you are doing back in Goa (hope both you and your house are well on the mend now), and i'm glad you survived the Air India flight (i know what you mean about the dodgy seats etc)! Thanks also for kindly updating us all on the current situation/feeling amongst FNs/agents etc which is very useful to know. Atleast as you say for now FNs are selling at the full market value to Indians/NRIs/PIOs which is a relief to hear (putting aside all the other sticky issues involved)!

It doesn't surprise me many are trying to get out while they can and atleast some agents are being upfront about the situation, although as you say i don't know how they can predict that things'll be hunky dory soon!

Anyway thanks again for the info & maybe see you soon out in Goa and goodluck with settling back in to Goan life.

& all the very Best,
TDK:)

Hi Indiapurple,

Lucky you out there in the sun. It is always a tedious task opening up the Apartment - and I have to have everything down NOW, BUT it is worth it in the end. Although I do feel sorry for those who go 2 weeks at a time.

Hope Remy is not travelling on India Airways he will be well noffed off.
We are travelling on BA - would have preferred Jet but it was nearly £200 more.

Please keep in touch and let us know how things are going.
Have bought draft excluder this morning for Goa (to keep the ****** mossies out), and a lovely solar lantern for the balcony. One bag already packed.

Regards Noni

Hi Indiapurple,:D

Thanks very much about the update and its very interesting to see that the visa dilema is a big topic of coversation and indeed concern. Its sad that many FNs are opting for the sell and get out option although i can see were they are coming from.

Noni, the way i feel at the moment, i would fly to Goa in a microlite just to get out of this s***hole.

I cant believe they wouldnt give out noffi on the plane.........b*****ds.:curse:

Roll on December........bloody hell times dragging.
Indiapurple, have a Kings on me.

Kind Regards,

Remy

Hi indiapurple

Nice to hear from you, sorry we didn't get chance to meet at the airport. Your journey sounded totally different to ours, really recommend Jet Airways, brand new planes, 3 seats each, they couldn't do enough for you, food and drinks excellent, must remember all that next time we come out!

We have been having a fab week, got so much done! We are really at home, even hired a bike. Good luck with everything and hope you get over the sore tum.

ps Noni, can't you get draught excluder here? I have just had an email from friend who has asked for her door measurements, so that she can bring out the same!

Regards

Hi Folks,

Why does one need a draught excluder in Goa?
Is this not a bit like having an ashtray on a motorbike?

Hi Remy,

My guess is that the draught excluders are used to help keep out mossies/mini rodents/roaches etc from the cracks under the door etc(?)Although having said that i recently read that rats (duno about mice) have tooth enamel stronger than industrial diamonds and can happily chew through metal and masonry)! I once had the interesting experience of sharing a room with some scorpions, a spider that looked liked it had escaped from the Amazon  and a few mice that were too friendly for their own good and i wokeup one night to find them crawling on my back! (but that was in HP in more rustic surroundings)!

Hi Remy,

To keep the bloody mossies and frogs from coming under the door :curse: :curse:

I didn' know that frogs could squash themselves flat and get under doors
we put Mr. Frog out every evening and every time we came back he was
sitting on a picture laughing at us - no - not the noffi the noffing frog.

Kinrara - I find it best to get things like that over here, than drag Aky around with a face like a slapped :curse::curse::curse::curse: It saves on my blood pressure. Any way - do they have drafts in Goa :rofl:

Hi Noni,

We have been very lucky and have never experienced mossi problems even on the jungle book tour, when we slept in a mud hut.
However, we havent been to Goa over the monsoon season......which i believe is when mossis are at their worst.
We usually try and wear long sleeves/trousers etc in the evening and always apply Deet to exposed skin.(very very important)

Also i think its important to stay indoors at dawn and at dusk as the buggers are out in their millions at these times.....searching for unsuspecting FNs. (They wont bite me......as im one of them)

Still I can't wait to go back to the Mossies, frogs, snakes, and the D of E and the police etc.

She is right about the mossies coming under the doors - it must be your blood group that they do not like.

When are you going to Goa?

Hi Remy,

Come to think of it i really should've sub-let my room to Spielberg as a film set for a follow up to the Temple of Doom!!
When i was in Bodhgaya in peak pilgrimage season some years back i found one very effective way to part the crowds (when in a hurry), was to wear my black cowboy style hat, dark glasses and a dark shawl, so i looked a little bit sinister and it worked a treat (haven't used a whip though since i stopped horse riding in my teens).

Her and Michael are a lovely couple - the press leave them alone when they come home and only print photos of her and her family when they have left.
Michael is excellent with going out with the boys - both are very generous although people do not know what they do for our community.

OH Dear Working to-day :rofl: Watched the Rugby :thumbdown: had a few 'noffi's and then sat on the Club roof, enjoying the sun, and watched an air display across the bay - the Red Arrows were spectacular (or was it the 'noffi)

Regards

I took draft excluder out from the UK. It was to stop the mossies getting under the door but as I have not had it fitted yet I do not know if it will work. I plan to get it fitted when I arrive back in October. I am booked with Jet Airways because of the newish planes and the excellent service I have received on previous flights.

Back to Goa has turned into a draught excluder discussion ;) funnily enough it is the first thing we bought when we got back in May so that we would remember to take it back with us. We have one of those industrial light machines but when the flying ants are about we get them coming under the door and sick of looking at rolled up newspapers. (Last season took the sticky backed foam excluder for the doors).
Noni - you may be pleasantly suprised by BA - we travelled with them last year and they were excellent - good food - as much as you wanted to drink and the steward gave me a couple of miniature vodkas with the tops intact to take off the plane with me. Have you booked a special meal - we always do as you get served first and it always seems better than the run of the mill meal. I chose seafood menu and had salmon and prawns.
I have a friend who is related to KZJ and always says nice things about them and not because they are related.

I thought this was a new thread, started reading through,September ,yes Ok.
Then I realised apart from the last 2 posts I was back in September 2007 !
Never mind in just over 3 weeks I'll be able to add to it.

PS My new item for this season (apart from six cushions c/w covers and a very heavy leather rug) is a plastic device in a semi-circle shape that you screw to the wall to wrap your hosepipe round. It has a drawer in the middle for your trowel, secateurs etc. saves bending and works a treat for 150 bht.
( Rs.200) .

Make sure you measure your door, our draught excluder was 1" short.
or the Goan door was too big - but it did make a big difference to the Mossies.

Strange, draught excluders have been on our list also, the aluminium screw on type with the brushes.

OH thinks they will only brush dirt indoors, but very handy to keep the mossies out, and those flying ants on the few days in the year they seem to come to life in swarms and then disappear.

We have a resident family of gheckos who are no problem except for their droppings, and they seem to be able to get in our out of the house without difficulty. I'm told they're quite useful in keeping the ant population down. Quite fascinating watching them make love; takes a hell of a long time, very slow and rhythmical.

Bit sad that, getting "cheapies" watching gheckos copulate; scientific interest only, you understand. Ahemmm!;)

Our new and expensive 'monsoon blind' (the see through plastic one) was fitted outside our side patio doors where the rain comes most. They were done by Habitat and we were told they would last at least 4 to 5 monsoons.
This was May. By the begininning of August they were shredded in pieces and scattered all over the place.
Apparently not even been a particularly bad monsoon either. (we are in the UK at the mo) We are still waiting for a replacement:frown:

Well Babu, whatever turns you on.

The draft excluder has also stopped the frogs coming in.
As for Mossies, we have an industrial mossie zapper, bats (love them), draft excluders, spray, proper mossie screens on the outside of the windows. etc. and they still come in.
I expect they are waiting at the airport for us, as we speak.

We have mossie screens on all opening windows and on the balcony and they still get in. We thought it may be the light showing under our front door which was attracting them through the gap which is why we got the draft excluder (with brushes). Keeping my fingers crossed that it works as our son, daughter in law and three grandchildren are using the apartment for 3 weeks in November. We are moving out and into a friends apartment while they are there.
