Re: Bread Flour & Fast Action Dried Yeast?
Firstly have you got a bread machine or are you going to make it by hand?
Atta is wholemeal flour for making chappatis and we use it in our bread machine at home. We did bring the fast action yeast with us and put it in the fridge, can't really see it being on general sale here as it is too hot to keep it for long plus there are not many homes with ovens. OH made the bread by hand as we had an oven but it did not rise to its full volume and was a little "solid" - oh liked it but I prefer to buy it from the bread boy. Hate shop sliced stuff unless it is for toast and when we are not here have not had "shop" bread for over 20 years. |

When we are in Spain we go to the local bakery and get fresh yeast to make "hand made" bread and use fast action dried yeast in the machine. The reason I asked if it was for a bread machine is that you can't use fresh yeast in a bread machine.

Think I will bring out the fast action dried yeast though and as you say store in the fridge, thanks. |

Why don't you have a go in the UK first? You can get atta from lots of asian shops (and even Tesco's these days). It might be best to see how well the flour works than to lug the bread machine over to Goa and find out it's not so good. Luggage allowances are precious. :D

Re: Bread Flour & Fast Action Dried Yeast?
No atta will not make a good loaf as it will not rise - my oh mixes it with maida when he makes "oven" bread. (Maida is wholewheat flour)
My hubby was going to bring one of ours but after weighing things up said it could be ruined by power surges although you could buy a voltage regulator (£12) and if the electric goes off whilst in use the bread is ruined. The other thing is that the voltage drops very low and the heating element in the machine would not bring your baking chamber to a high enough temperature to bake the bread. He also said he would be loathed to leave it here during the monsoon. (This is from a man who has got 4 machines - all Panasonic - which are in the places we stay - except Goa - when not at home so he never has to eat shop bread) |

Thanks for your reply, really appreciate it. Do you know what stores like Bread & More do for flour? It seems strange if you can't buy strong flour in Goa! Hubby and I did discuss the voltage, but thought that if the power dropped, the thermostat would regulate it:unsure: We have also bought a Panasonic, curious to understand why you are loathed to leave it in Goa during the monsoon, as I leave all my electrical items there and they have been ok on our return.

He said because of the high humidity although we leave lots of electrical things here. If I see the boss in Bread and More I will ask him.
