Thanks for the help, i also banged the same question on India Mike, and no i dont need to register if im staying less than 180 days.

NRI dont require visas. Tourist Visas are 180 day max. Employment visas,Student Visa, Missionary visa, Medical Visa, Journalist Visa do not have that clause as per the FAQs posted at the website of MHA or immigrations (I know it was one of the two) you do have to register and ask for extensions.

On a business visa staying > 180 days is allowed but only in rare occasions. Definitely not if you work for a multinational vertical.

Anuny, NRI with foreign passports certainly do require visas. With the same hassle as everyone else.
I think Bubbly's husband will have an employment visa and her visa will depend on that, according to who he is employed by.

NOT According to the Home Ministry. NRI is an Indian Citizen.

this is the same x visa, and on this x visa, you can stay in India for the length of the visa.

Safest way is to pop into the FRO and ask whether you need to register. They will soon tell you! It now requires so many pieces of paper (about 32 last count) to register with a business visa (without the 180 day restriction, of course) that it is easier to act as if the restriction is there and have a few days holiday out of India!

You are looking at the site for OCI, and for this an applicant NRI has to have an Indian passport.
Many so-called NRI have foreign passports and therefore they need a visa, as Steve has said above they are eligible for a 5 year entry visa.

I have used what the Government of India defines as an NRI. You have indian ethnicity and non-indian passport, you are a foreign national of Indian origin :) The Indian Consulate in New York provides services to NRI (i.e to indians in the US who still hold Indian passport) whereas Indians holding US passports go to VFS for everything other than OCI/PIO.

Anuny you are 'splitting hairs' I have no idea what happens in the USA, but in the UK the word NRI is used colloquially to cover Indian-born people living here, especially when the Indian Gov. is keen to get investment and promises (always broken) dual nationality. On this forum does it matter? those with British passports need a visa of some sort. Those with Indian passports are unlikely to be asking questions.

Yes i agree,we tried to register last year and when we were given the list of documents needed we just booked a flight out of India before the 180 days were up.
