Medical Insurance Companies

The company I'm with want to take my military pension into consideration when working out how much I should pay. They say the pension is a private one and they can include it in their figures. In fact the military pension is a public pension and should not be in included.

Germany taxes world income. Medical aid contributions are based on income. Public pensions from what I was told are being considered at 50 %, private pensions in full. My info is 2 yrs old. However, there is a limit up to which pensions are taxfree. Quite a low amount. This is considered in the calculation of medical aid subs. They often ask to see income tax declaration (Einkommensteuer Bescheid) to make sure you don't get charged toi little.

Military pensions are generally regarded as income just like any other pension and are taxed at source in the UK; where people come unstuck is that while a double-taxation agreement is in place between UK/D and you should not be assessed twice on the same income, it does not cover social taxes such as medical insurance, so we ex-mil are liable for local tax assessments on these incomes.

I'd advise you to speak to a German financial/tax adviser on the matter.

Here in Osnabruck we have arranged a meeting with the DAK for next Tuesday to stop them using our Public money when working out our dues. We are being supported by our Union.
