Why do you think the foreign office tell you to always carry your original in date passport ? When we have to send our passport to Madrid for renewal we are actualy breaking the law for a couple of weeks. |
Re: Is ID really compulsory all the time in Germany?
No , I can't disagree with you ;
just why the U.K. can't get to provide an acceptable I.D. card , would make for a nice long new thread , don't you think ? In the interim , I absolutely must mention how incredibly helpful , flexible and/or forgiving various police officers have been to me ( on any number of occassions ) ; yepp , to a a Brit ( = Foreigner ) in the last 20-30 odd years , from Catalunya to Austria , in BeNeLux and Germany , Liechtenstein and Cyprus and Slovenia ... - no positive nor pleasant experiences of any such lucks with our own , stuck up , jumped-up "force" in the U.K. , sadly ! |

Especially since France got voted the world's best place to live AGAIN ( for the consecutive 5th year running ) , with Germany , Switzerland and Belgium also in the Top 10 ( made up of the usual Oz , NZ , Canada , USA ...also : Luxembourg and Italy ) but , hey : Nil mention of U.K. , Ireland or Spain... I'm actual ok now...hubby was offered a A3 in shape again and begging me to move back to Belgium..not a chance...then he got a job offer in Norfolk US, they were desperate to get him over there..wifes sending me emails with pics, boss phoning me up. Our children are 12 and 15 and just started her GCSE...not a good time to move to the US. So he took the job in Somerset, not really what he wanted but at least still with NATO. Cant wait to move to Somerset and leave London behind us, unfortunate he has to start in Spring this year and I have to stay behind with girls until summer 2011 to finish GCSE..buhu. I couldn't believe how impossible it is to change school during GCSE . Belgium in the top 10 to best to live countries...cant believe it:blink: Hopefully Somerset will be the place to settle down. buy a house and enjoy live a bit more. |

The bit about any back-stabbing : I don't quite get...ne'ermind ? As for Belgium in the world's Top 10 , again : it was in The Independent , last week , plus in a few other papers ; same old reasons , I suppose - like excellent infrastructure , top health arrangements , easy to get in & out of , best beer , fine food , chic ladies...one could wax lyrically forever ( well , almost ! ) ; it can be a bit on the expensive side , but : where is that not the case , nowadays ? ( Germany scored better still , anycase . ) |

Besides..found it funny that you were telling me how it works in Germany ;-) This is an open forum for expats in Germany and the question is "Is ID really compulsory all the time in Germany?", so my answer is made on that basis. Despite what you had said in an earlier post in this thread (not required to carry) there were still questions being asked. The definitive answer is "No, you don't" which I am sure you can agree with. |

( Germany scored better still , anycase . ) OK Belgium...never mind all that being in the top 10, 100 horses couldn't drag me back there, which is a shame really, because with a A3 working for Nato we would be very well of, plus NATO pays for UNI for the kids. I really wish I would like it over there. Maybe it would have been different moving to the Flemish part, but I didn't wanted to take that risk..getting 50 in February and starting to feel it. Just want to settle and besides, I like it in England..just not around London. Take care:) |

well, if you're an expat it means you live in Germany, though unless you lived pretty close they won't be taking you back to your place to find the document but it's happened. ;-)
expats really shouldn't worry about being stopped and required to show id. the cops in the uk can do the same and both police forces have officers who are usually pretty relaxed unless you give them a reason to not be. just be respectful and they will be fine with you. As for this little number I wasn't telling you how it works. You may have misunderstood the use of 'you' which in English can work the same as 'man' in German (not only as Sie). I think you fit very well in in Germany;) |

Take care:) the problem being : once you're not in/around Bruxelles , the shopping gets significantly more limited and less sophisticated ; the life can appear duller ; the worst of all , to buy a decent house in Vlaanderen could cost just as much ( or more , even ? ) than in nice parts of England . Good Luck with settling in Somerset ! |

I had a look around the English school for houses just to give it a go and try to be cooperative, but what I have seen drove water into my eys and this after almost 4 years of house searching in greater London. We went to Somerset and had a look...its fantastic and everything I ever wanted. OK is not what he wanted..but it has to go ones what's best for the family. He will survive and maybe there is for once some space to do something with his live besides his work for NATO ;) |
