Try some of his work. Not so good in translation but still worth looking at. Even better visit the Fallada-Hasu in Carwitz near Feldberg. He bought the farmhouse there from the American royalties on the US version of "Little Man, What Now ? ?" The book and film describe how an ordinary man was ground down into poverty and despair during The Great Depression. Could be good reading in preparation for the New Greater Recession that is coming

That is a page about Elise Hampel who was executed in 1943. She and her husband distributed hand-written cards denouncing Hitler as a murderer. The police file on this couple was shown to Hans Fallada and formed the basis for his postwar novel "Jeder stirbt fuer sich allein". A truly great work of Modern Literature, it was not translated into English for many years. The American translation is called "Alone in Berlin"

There have been several Film and TV versions. Here is the most recent - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alone_in_Berlin_(film)

Published in the year when Hans Fallada died. The year when i was born. At that time no one in the outside world wanted to hear anything about Germany. The book was not translated into English for many decades.

When reading the story ask "What would I have done ?"

In Fallada's novel the name has been changed to Quangel, but he based the story on the police files given to him by his mentor, Johannes Becker.
