Is there a searchable 'Electoral Roll' in Germany??I am trying to trace a British ex-pat who I have been told is living in/near Hamburg, but cannot find him through usual telephone books and directories etc... Or - is there an authority to whom I may enquire re: the possibility of him having applied for German citizenship?? Contact is required for urgent family reasons. Any help appreciated, thanks.

In the U.S., you'd enquire of the appropriate DMV, registrar of voters, or local tax
rolls. I assume other countries have similar entities. There are attorneys and
private detectives who specialize in finding "missing" people - not for free, of
course, but if the matter is really important....

You could try www.192.com But It'll cost you 100 GBP just to look !! with no
guarantees. But will cover other European countries in case he moved.

You could try the "Einwohnermeldeamt". This is some sort of local government office
for the registration of residents. If he really lives in Germany, he must be
registered somewhere, at least legally.

What is that?

Have you tried www.telefonbuch.de? It's the national telephone book. You can look
just for names without specifying the city.

Einwohnermeldeamt - The local parish's register of one of the cities where he may
have lived before. They'll tell you his address provided
- You know one of his previous addresses in Germany.
- You state a "good reason" to know (i.e. he owes you money etc.). It'll cost a
small fee.

Hope this helps
